Like many women, I have a complicated relationship with my birthday. There was a time in my girlhood where it felt incredibly exciting, but somewhere in my teen years, the annual celebration began to have more melancholy undertones. Perhaps I have some internalized fear of aging, or maybe it is because every year, I have to come to terms with the fact that I have not "progressed" or "improved" in the way I thought I would. As such, I like to plan out the day of my birth very meticiously. My boyfriend even gives me my gifts the week leading up to my birthday to avoid surprises on the day of.

In our story day, a young woman has planned a whole trip for her birthday. She booked a getaway with a friends a whole month in advance, and her boyfriend seemed cool with it. However, when her boyfriend's mom sends a "mandatory" invite to last-minute a family dinner, he's suddenly much less into the idea of her vacation.
