So... I got someone fired over $18

    "I'm a bit shook"

I went to a nursery today and bought a stone sink basin. At the counter I asked if they have a cart or could help me get it in the car since the sink probably weighs about 80-90 lbs and parking was kinda far. The cashier rolls out a

pallet dolly for me but doesn't offer to help, understandable since there were people in line behind me. I get the sink in the car and bring back the dolly and the guy is surprised. I realize through a quick exchange with him and confirm on the receipt that he's charged me 18 bucks to rent the dolly for 12 hours.

I say no no no, I just needed it for here, on the store property, to get it in the car. But he says 'it's done.' and then turns to the next customer. I wait for the customer to finish and then it's just me and the cashier and I tell him I'd like to return the sink I just bought. His

body language basically says it all, I'm sure mine showed I was ped too since I really was getting ped and I had just got off work and had sweat dripping down my a. He says he'll have to go ask about it and heads in the office. I hear some guys yelling but can't make out anything specific. The cashier

The manager, I assume, came out then. He asked me what happened then popped the register and gave me a cash refund for the $18 and I left... but I'm a bit shook. I never thought each step of this would escalate like it did. I don't think I was in the wrong but if I knew the

guy would get fired or quit or whatever I might of just let it go. Fk, should I have let it go? It's making me cringe super hard that someone lost their job because I wanted my 18 bucks back. Lay it on me, am i the a hole?

Webinformal9558 There's no way you could have predicted that, and it was almost certainly about more than just the interaction with you. NTA.
  • 11
hem... NTA by any means. You didn't get this guy fired, he got himself fired. I would bet my life's savings that he was not a stellar employee who was fired over this single incident,
  • 12
rather this was the straw that broke the camel's back in a long string of on-going issues. Don't feel bad at all.
  • 13
Remy93 He wasn't fired for $18. He was fired for being a terrible employee
  • 14
Alieninmyattic NTA. I imagine that cashier was on thin ice with warm skates before you met him.
  • 15
butterbeemeister If the manager had to ask you what happened, I doubt he fired the guy and it's more likely the guy quit. That would be some bad management firing him without knowing your side of the story. NTA.
  • 16
Mr-Fishbine He got himself fired. Sleep well.

Capable-Broccoli-204 So coming from a retail standpoint he was in the wrong, he didn't communicate the cost about the $18 and if he got fired he had many more issues before this situation, I wouldnt pay it a second thought.

CrazyStone23 Absolutely not your fault, kid had probably been messing up on multiple occasions like that and that was the managers last straw

Dramatic-Ant-9364 Nope - You are thinning the herd of, for the rest of us. I thank you for your efforts!

PsycheAs..... NTA- I'm honestly confused as to what retail store would expect a customer to need a dolly for 12 hours? Well... at least when it comes to just getting this item to your car? It totally seems like you got ripped off for a moment...
  • 22
But its not your fault that the cashier was choosing to act like a stubborn a and walk off the job. Idk if maybe it was a build-up to some real issues going on with his life, but you didn't get him fired. It seems like he quit. I can't even imagine how $18 would warrant a firing???

Idk. I've never even shopped at a nursery before, so I can't understand how the h I this happened the way it did either.
