'Dude, you're not taking [my cats]': Entitled guy keeps locking his roommate's cat in his room, calls the cat his, and implies that he's going to take the cat one day, leading to an uncomfortable confrontation

Roommate drama and cats seem to go hand in hand, and we don't get it. Cats are such small creatures who sleep most of the day… why wouldn't anyone make them into an issue, we don't know, but they do. We have seen some crazy stuff about cats and roommates. We have seen cat owners demand that their roommates clean up after the cat, even though it's not theirs. We have seen inconsiderate roommates allow a cat to escape, even though that was easily avoidable. Heck, we have seen roommates complain about cats due to being allergic… after agreeing to the adoption. 

But this one… this one hurts a little bit more. First-time cat owner adopts a bonded pair, and the roommate, understandably perhaps, falls in love with one of the cats, talking about how it reminds them of their childhood cats and things like that. But the roommate is not taking care of the cat, he's not even being nice to it, and that hurts. Love the cat, spend time with it, but be responsible about it.

    i pay for everything for them, i scoop their every day, i brush them and play with them, they're my responsibility and my pets. My roommate loves one of them, and keeps shutting her in his room, even when he sleeps or if he leaves for the day.

    I think when he leaves he's just genuinely not aware of his surroundings and shuts the door, he shuts the doors a LOT after he leaves a room so it's a habit, but it's infuriating because she has to , eat, drink, get her energy out, etc.

  • First and foremost, separating bonded pairs is awful, and it should not happen if we can do anything about it. And that's what's causing us to be so suspicious of this roommate (on top of all the other things, obviously). If he really loved the cat this much, then he would not be keeping him away from his bonded sibling.

    and i walk by his door when he leaves for work and she's pawing underneath the door and meowing. I've asked him and he does not have food, water, or a litter box in his room for her.

    i texted him asking him to please check for the cats before he shuts the doors and he basically brushed it off, saying "oh what a stinker! guess she was under the bed"...if i didn't let her out who knows how long she would have been in there for?

    "she reminds me so much of my childhood cat!", "yeah maybe one day if i take her-" (i cut him off when he said this with "dude, they're a bonded pair. and they're mine. you're not taking ".) and he just changed them the subject.

    but it's honestly really angering me that he's shutting her in his room with him while he sleeps. she used to sleep with me or her brother (who is VERY bonded to her and has super bad anxiety without her) but now she literally goes into his room every night.

    yesterday i let her out and she RACED to drink water and then tried getting back into his room?? like....she's my cat. honestly this is my first pet, so i'm just feeling very protective over her and i'm angry that she's spending time with him rather than me when i take 100% care of her.

    if both doors are open, she'll sleep in my room with her brother. but if i'm not in my room, i hear him and his girlfriend at night call her into their room and they shut the door.

  • And look, we can understand falling in love with a roommate's cat, we really can, and since the cat runs into that roommate's room sometimes, maybe the cat likes him. But it can't keep going under the same conditions. At the very, very least, there should be a litterbox, some water and food in that room.

    we got them from a friend who could no longer keep them, and they've been microchipped with her info and she is happy to help us if anything goes wrong. we also have collars on the way that are break away and reflective and have my info stitched on them :)
