    "AITA for not tipping?"

Little back story for this is my fiance and I just moved across our state a month ago. We had many upfront costs that usually come with that and are just now seeing little profit from our new jobs. So now the situation at hand. We both had the day off and I had a little spending money so I decided to take us on a date. I gave many options including fast food and told him my budget of $30. He chose a sit down place after we saw online prices being about $10 a person

meaning I could tip well. When we arrived the prices were higher but there were still $10 options and I ordered one. He ordered a $15 option as she was taking the menus so I didn't know until the bill. I ordered a water and he ordered a drink that costs with each refill. I received the bill and it was $30.57. I barely had that in my account but it meant I couldn't tip. I very embarrassed wrote a $0 tip on the receipt and tried to hurry out the door feeling awful but as I was getting up he

looked at the receipt and shouted across the whole restaurant "YOURE NOT TIPPING??" Completely red as a tomato I ran out as everyone's conversations obviously stopped and looked angrily at me. On the ride home I explained I barely covered that meal. I had given a clear budget and many options that were not sit down restaurants and embarrassing me was awful to do. We are currently on opposite sides of the house as he now

won't talk to me and I feel like a massive ahole I couldn't afford to tip. (I do plan to go once my next paycheck hits my account and give the woman $20 cash tip but he says that's too late and I ruined her day by not tipping.) So, reddit, am I the ahole..

ETA: the agreement before we went in was to get $10 meals and just waters. With taxes I was expecting at most $25 which would allow a $5 tip. Also, I sold an item on FB marketplace and just went back tipping her $30.

I dont believe I'm the ahle since I gave many options as to where to go for food.

Triscuitmeniscus YTA. You know that $25 in food plus a drink and taxes is going to be really close to $30 even if there were free refills. If you literally have less than $40 in your account you don't have money for a date at a sit- down restaurant.

CarterPFly ESH. You two have next to NO money so you go out to eat... How does that make any sense whatsoever for either of you to do? This level of financial irresponsibility on both your parts is just ridiculous, you both need to sort your sh out.

[deleted] It sounds like your fiancé blew your budget deliberately, then publicly shamed you. Am I reading that right?
  • 11
thirdtryisthecharm ESH If you're on a tight $30 budget, it's not the time to go to a restaurant on a date. Eat at home and go on a walk or to a museum or a free concert for the date.

MinerReddit NTA - Your fiancé is a giant a hole. He goes over budget, He yells across the whole restaurant to embarrasses you and then belittles your idea to make the waitress whole. He turned a nice gesture from yourself and made it into a pile of crop. His broke ass should have come up with a tip if he thought it was so important.
  • 13
Unlike your fiancé, I will leave you with a tip here. This is a massive red flag if this is his typical behavior. Enjoy dealing with crop like this with him.
  • 14
GoldenFrog14 ESH. I don't mean this to be harsh, but you could not afford to go out at that time and should have realized it. Slightly over $30 in your account is not spending money
  • 15
SickofltAll_4200 ESH, you for not tipping and your BF for yelling "YOU'RE NOT TIPPING??" across the place
  • 16
LSion-Na NTA. Sounds like he set her up for this ngl. He TA. Why would he shout saying that On another topic just curious bc I don't come from a place where you tip so is tipping a must?
  • 17
[deleted] You went in with the numbers crunched, fully expecting to leave a tip. Your loser fiance cant stick to a budget and them calls you out in front of the whole restaurant? Did he not have a few dollars to contribute? NTA

JohnCashew Relax. You're totally NTA. 1. You tip if you want to tip, and if you can afford to tip. 2. If your partner had troubles with not tipping, why didn't he put some of his pocket money?

    3. Prices of meals in restaurants should consider that employees work there and they deserve a fair salary as well, from employer.
  • 21
NordicAtheist NTA: keep doing that. There seems to be a problem with the culture in your country where the people who are working aren't getting paid, and you are supposed to give something extra on the side? All they need to do is to charge the correct amount to begin with, no need to be dishonest with the economy.

[deleted] YTA. The waiter shouldn't have to pay for you lack of ability to communicate with your husband. If you don't have the budget to eat out, don't.

No_... NTA. I live in UK, not US. Here, we can tip but it isn't required. If somebody shouted at their partner, "You're not tipping?" We'd not look at their partner angrilly, it would barely register. I know things are different in the US, tips are more important. But not a legal

requirement. I did read up on it, that it is expected, almost seen as wrong not to. But a socially obligated thing, not legal. Some of what I read made no sense to me, like if the service is bad you'd still be expected to tip but maybe 10% instead of 20%. Here, bad service, tip woud be 0%, full stop. A friend and me were once annoyed when we went to a

self serve restaurant, we were given the price of a buffet, and at the end there was a 10% service charge added on at the end. So yeah, I'd say NTA, mainly because in the UK we are less expected to tip. I would say if my partner was paying for a meal, we had good service, and they were going to leave without tipping, if I wanted a tip to

be given I'd give it out of my pocket, not shout at them. Especially if I'd been the one who ordered more than she agreed to spend.
