AITA for refusing to give a birthday cake to a kids party at the park, even after the mom made a huge scene?

"We should be ashamed for stealing from children"

This happened last weekend at a public park. I was there with some friends having a picnic. One of us brought a store-bought chocolate cake for dessert. After eating for a while, we sang happy birthday to our friend and started cutting the cake.

Then this woman comes up to us looking super mad and asks why we're eating her son's birthday cake. We were confused and told her it was our cake. She kept insisting we stole it and that it was from her setup nearby.

Apparently she was throwing a party at one of the pavilions a little ways down and had a similar chocolate cake from the same grocery store. I guess she thought we just wandered over and helped ourselves?

We tried to explain that we brought our own and even said we could show her a receipt, but she was not listening at all. She started yelling that we ruined

her son's birthday and that we should be ashamed for stealing from children. Then she demanded that we give her the rest of our cake to make it right.

At this point a bunch of people were watching and it was super awkward. She was going off saying things like "what kind of adult eats a kids birthday cake and doesn't even care?" and stuff like that.

I told her no. I said I'm sorry for the confusion but this is our cake and we're not giving it away. She called me selfish and stormed off.

A few minutes later her party started and her kids showed up and they had what looked like basically the same exact cake as ours.

Some of my friends said maybe I should of just gave her the rest to avoid the whole thing, but I don't really think I did anything wrong. Still felt kinda crappy sitting there with cake while her kids showed up to a meltdown.

Bibliophile_w_coffee NTA. She was out of line, you did nothing wrong.
  • 15
No_Statistician_3846 Also what is up with all these spineless friends that are all like, well you should have just caved to avoid a scene?
  • 16
Glittering_knave It sounds like angry lady forgot her cake, and thought she had an easy out for getting one fast. I can't imagine someone being able to walk into a party and steal the cake, not get caught and then brazenly eat the cake in sight of the party.
  • 17
Oldmanenok She realized that she didn't buy enough cake for her party then jumped on the coincidence of op having the same cake hoping to get more for free.
  • 18
Missmessc We need to stop feeling bad because someone makes accusations. Clearly you did nothing wrong. NTA

Successful_Voice8542 "I have the exact make, model and color car as you. You must have stolen mine. Just hand over the keys to avoid a scene."
  • 20
Lithogiraffe NTA But I might be. Because my first thought was going over there, siding up to the mom turning to her and say - Oh! Did you find your cake?!!
  • 21
    i_am_snoof 100% the only response.
  • 22
EDJardin NTA, and you absolutely should not have given her the rest of yours. What you SHOULD have done is walk over to her party and demand an apology for causing a scene and ruining your friend's party.
  • 23
Apocolypse Joe NTA I would have walked right over to their pavilion and demanded an apology.
