28-year-old boyfriend refuses to let girlfriend move into his rent-free apartment when she demands they split utilities based on their income: "I would actually be paying more than I do now"

Living with a partner is the first step to building a life together. And for people who think they've "lived with their partner" without signing a lease, they're sorely mistaken. Just because you spend every night together, your clothes are there, your books, your toothbrush, and your food, doesn't mean you "live" together. Signing a lease, moving in, planning, decorating, dealing with landlords or other tenants together, it's completely different. 

Knowing you have the option of sleeping in your own place also drastically changes the dynamic. There's an immediate energetic shift when you both decide on moving in together. The prospects of breaking up become less possible in a fluid way. You bank on each other more, you have to be equally responsible in the home, and you have to be aligned in your finances. Now everything is shared, and there's no option to move out unless you break up (usually). Break ups are hard enough, but to break up and now be homeless is an entirely different ballpark. I don't wish it on anyone.
