'Cats are all the same': Police officers attempt to lure a bobcat that broke into a house by making it chase lasers, thinking that all cats like lasers, but the bobcat is entirely unimpressed with them

Here at ICHC, we often say that all cats… are cats first. And big cats act like housecats all the time. Bobcats like playing around with their favorite toys, even if those toys are simply fennel. Baby jaguars pick fights with enemies much bigger than they are - like their mom's ears - and lose to them. Caracals like nagging their humans by sitting directly on their keyboard, yes, just like your little housecat does thirteen times a day. 

And so… we really can't blame these cops for trying. If we didn't know a better way of doing it, then we too might have tried to lure a bobcat that broke into someone's house by getting it to chase a laser. What a cute idea, right? It's a good thing that the bobcat did not fall for these human's silly tricks, because we don't think that they thought through what would have happened had it worked. A bobcat frantically running around inside a house trying to catch a magically disappearing dot and getting frustrated over failing… yeah, we would have paid to see that.

  • A cat is going to cat, and this cat was simply too smart for their laser pointer tricks. We have one of those cats at home - not a bobcat, no, we're talking about one of those cats who have figured out what the laser pointer is and simply stare at us instead of trying to chase it.

    Amy Auffret Shelly Ok everyone, this is my house and this happened last Thursday. I (stupidly) left my door unlatched because my cat meatball was still out and can swing on the handle and open the door and let himself back in, and I wanted to go to bed. Woke up at 4am to crashing and banging and came face to face with this guy. My fault - learned my lesson! He was probably chasing Meatball inside.

    Parks and Wildlife and an amazing officer named Jerrie saved the day and told us to quit it with the lasers and just make the house dark and quiet and after 4 hours, that did the trick.

    Keep your garage doors closed, garbage inside till day of pickup, and don't leave the door unlatched for your pets. I'm just glad this baby wasn't hurt.

  • This… would have been one of the most shocking moments of our lives, and you know what? We respect the way that you handled it. Because we don't know if we would have been able to restrain ourselves from trying to go and pet that little dude.
