26-year-old brother kicks 22-year-old college grad sister out of his apartment after she breaks his one rule to not invite strangers over: "One of them was drinking from my mug"

Every day, I thank my lucky stars that I am out of the part of my life where I lived with roommates. Well, I do have a roommate of sorts – my partner! But we're pretty good at managing our domestic squabbles. Gone are the days of living with semi-strangers or college acquaintances that should have remained the type of friend that I occasionally catch up with over coffee instead of seeing every morning. Even your closest bestie can absolutely drive you up the wall over sharing, bills, and chores once you start living together. 

In our story today, a generous brother lets his little sister stay with him while she gets on her feet after college. It's a pretty good gig for her; she gets a place to live for free, and she only has to follow one simple rule: no guests. Surely, she would respect her brother's space and not mess this up, right?     The only thing I made clear when she moved in was that I'm not okay with people coming over. I don't host, ever. I don't care if it makes me weird, I just don't feel safe around unfamiliar people in my space. I told her that early on and she said she understood.

    This weekend I got back from a walk and there were three people I didn't know sitting on the couch. One of them was drinking from my mug. They were laughing, watching a show, super casual like this was their place. My sister just waved like it was no big deal and said "hope you don't mind."

  • This maybe could have been a warning before kicking her out completely. That said, he made the one rule of his home abundantly clear, and she completely disrespected it.

    Anytime I am going to have someone over I always tell him ahead of time so he doesn't walk out of his room to someone here or get home and someone's here. He never set this boundary but i know he's not a social butterfly so I minimum give a heads up.

    Maybe give her another chance, but make it implicitly clear, NO THIRD CHANCES. One strike and you're out (literally) would be harsh for a friend, it seems unreasonable with your sister (that you get along with and love).
