Rich parents beg people for money online to pay for their kids' sports camp: 'You can make YOUR dream of having a nicer boat or a new Louis bag come true, but other people should be paying for your kids' sports for you?'

Something rich people like to do is pretend they aren't rich, like the parents in this Reddit story. The original poster is annoyed at their wealthy friends for setting up an online donation page to help pay for their kids' summer sports camps. It's common for parents to have fundraisers to support their children's activities, but it's the framing these particular parents use that may come across as disingenuous. 

Online crowdfunding is typically meant for people who need help in emergencies or for charitable causes. I can even understand it when someone's trying to start a small business. But it is a bit odd to ask people to 'make your kids' dreams come true' and pay for their expensive sports camp when it's apparent to others that you make a six-figure salary. On the other hand, it's never good to assume the status of someone's finances.

  • Either way, it's good for kids, especially rich kids, to learn to value of working hard for something and that the things we want don't necessarily come easily. There are more creative ways to raise money, and you can even involve the kids in some way. You could put together a bake sale, car wash, raffle, or other fun event that goes beyond simply asking people online for cash. I'll let you decide – is this a case of entitled parents, or do you think their fundraising efforts are harmless?

    ttgcole We can barely afford for my kids to play competitively but I would never ever ask anyone to pay for something that we chose to do. It's not a need, it's a want. I wouldn't do it even if it was a need.
