My boss publicly humiliated me over a small mistake — and expected me to thank them for it

Yesterday at work, I accidentally missed one tiny detail in a report. It was a simple oversight something anyone could have missed.
  • 03
Instead of pulling me aside to talk quietly or help me fix it, my boss called me out in front of the entire team during a meeting.
  • 04
They raised their voice, called me careless and unprofessional and made it clear that I was the reason the whole project was delayed.
  • 05
I felt embarrassed, disrespected, and completely undermined. After the meeting, instead of apologizing or offering support, they told me I should be grateful
  • 06
for the "learning experience." Meanwhile, they still expect me to work overtime without extra pay to fix their mess. No one should have to be treated like that at work.
  • 07
It's toxic, humiliating, and it's honestly pushing me to quit.

emaji33 Time to act your wage.
  • 09
lost44heaven OP Yeah. It's time to stop overworking for less and start being valued properly.

Eldritch Agony284 If you have it in you, call them out in public as well. Then walk. Get your dignity back. People like your boss are cowards and usually can't handle being confronted. Put it to the test.
  • 12
lost44heaven OP I'm tempted. I want to stand up for myself but also have to be careful about the fallout.

shattersquad710 Everyone needs to start normalizing talking back to your bosses. I don't give af I who you are, have some respect. By this I mean in the appropriate context, like this situation. Don't be a for no reason, disrespectful obviously.
  • 14
lost44heaven OP I totally get that. Speaking up respectfully when something's wrong is so important, especially in situations like this. It's about holding leaders accountable without being disrespectful.
  • 15
recursivereader This is a huge red flag about your boss's leadership style. Instead of offering guidance or support, they chose to berate you in front of everyone, which only creates a toxic work environment. You should never be made to feel worthless for making a mistake.
  • 16
lost44heaven OP Absolutely, it's a major red flag. Good leadership means support, not humiliation.

poul0004 In situations like this, where I'm blamed as being the sole bottleneck on the critical path, I respond that if the project is that dependent on my sole efforts, I need to get paid more.
  • 18
lost44heaven OP If I'm truly the bottleneck, then I deserve to be paid like it. Makes total sense to me.

Practical_Tooth_2329 Your boss just did you a huge favor by showing you who they are. Now you know and can respond accordingly, decide if you can stay and work to contract, or (keep working while you) brush off your resume and start job hunting.

lost44heaven OP I'm definitely weighing my options now and considering what's best for me moving forward. Thanks for the perspective.

brykasch Praise in public criticize in private. Everyone knows this.
  • 22
isthisonetaken 13 Everyone with half a brain knows this. So, by my experience, about 10% of managers.
  • 23
lost44heaven OP Sounds about right. good managers are way too rare. It's frustrating when respect and decency feel like exceptions, not the rule.
