20+ Travelers who had inconvenient flights: 'My luggage gets shredded, and the airline’s response is... to call me a liar'

Have you ever had to check your luggage because it was 1/8 of an inch too big? That's just one of many, many things that can go wrong when you're trying to fly on a plane. Big picture: if your plane doesn't drop out of the sky mid-flight, you've had a great trip. But that doesn't mean that a dozen smaller things won't grind your gears while you're en route to your destination. For example, what if your seat mate brings a hula hoop with them as their carry-on item? Did you know that you could do that? I certainly did not, until today that is, because that's exactly what one person did. 

Lots of flyers pack their luggage very carefully, planning for the exact weight, height, and width that the airline requires their luggage to be. They squeeze in as many shirts and pants as they can without going over the limit, then head to the airport. But sometimes, they get stuck with a stingy airport gate attendant, who tells them that actually,  that bag is a few millimeters too big, or a half a pound too heavy. If your bag is over weight, you can just throw away a pair of socks or something. But there isn't much you can do if that same bag is too large — the airport has all the power in this situation, and all the customer can do is cough up like $70 to take their "oversized" bag on the flight anyway.     Only an influencer or true fashionista would dedicate an entire suitcase to like, 12 pairs of shoes. This also looks like she just threw them all in there instead of organizing them to fit. A true diva!

    … I specifically bought a soft one instead of a hard-shell suitcase. This seems to be incredibly common with flights — the flight crew just toss the bags around, meaning that a single bad throw can damage your hard-shell suitcase forever. No thanks!

    This person is on a trip to Madrid, and despite calling the airline a couple times each day, the airport staff are throwing up their hands and saying there's nothing they can do. I guess they'll need to buy 2 weeks worth of clothing and toiletries. How irritating!

    They didn't even have their proper clothing for a wedding they were attending! It took 3 full days for the airline to deliver the missing luggage.

    Even with a strongly worded email...

    Spirit Airlines made me pay $99 for a "carry on" that clearly fit the sizing of a personal item PAT NOW AT SPIRIT.COM/CARKTON spirit LESS MONEY. MORE GO PERSONAL ITEM Spirit's policy allows for one "free personal item" as long as it fits in their measurement box. Gate agent said I had to "push it down" to get it to fit (I didn't, one of the straps got snagged and I had to unsnag it but that was it).     … The airline will probably just say it was at the gate attendant's discretion. They have all the power here, and the customer has very little say in the matter. If they don't comply, they don't fly!

    Had to check my bag at the gate because it was 1/8" too wide (even though I've carried it on dozens of times) and they needed space but people can store their bags sideways EXIT EXIT

    This has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves when I see people dragging 4 wheel suitcases like this... Not to mention on reverse, where non of the wheels were touching the ground...
