When there is a misunderstanding, it's on you to recognize your own errors. It might feel embarrassing to admit fault, but it's what adults have to do. We're not perfect beings-- nobody is. So when we make a mistake, it's on us to own it. Say we're doing bar trivia with a friend and we insist that the capital of Missouri is Kansas City. We're assured in ourselves and won't take "no" for an answer. Someone suggests that it might be Jefferson City, but you won't hear it. You make your team write it down. And as the host is reading answers, your heart sinks. You've made a fool out of yourself. But you have the opportunity to correct it. 

You admit wrongdoing and arrogance humbly, and you buy a round of shots for your trivia team. Simple enough. But this requires admitting defeat (even though you have no choice), and this is far from an easy thing to do. Some people are so afraid to do it that they will ride a mistake into the ground to an absurd degree. That's what happened in this story.
