Should the choice be that a couple remains together after one of them has had an affair, extreme care must be taken to rebuild trust so that it feels like the right choice for the relationship to continue. If one or both parties do not respect this rule, they may be left wondering why they didn't just break up when the revelation happened. It is not uncommon for cheaters to be unfaithful because they feel their partner is lacking, in which case they probably shouldn't have committed to them in the first place.
