'Now there's tension in the office': Employee refuses to cancel nonrefundable vacation after coworker schedules wedding the same week

  • "AITJ for refusing to switch my vacation dates at work for a coworker’s wedding?"

I (29M) work in a small office. We have a vacation calendar where everyone reserves their time off months in advance.
  • CALENDAR SUN MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT 7 ་ 14 1 2 3 4 5 6 8 6 10 11 12 13 15 15 16 17 18 19 21 22 28 23 23 24 29 29 30 31 25 25 26
  • I put in for a week in October to visit my girlfriend's family overseas, flights already booked, nonrefundable.
  • A newer coworker (31F) just got engaged and apparently set her wedding for the exact week I'm gone.
  • She came to me asking if I could move my vacation "since a wedding is a bigger deal than a trip."
  • I explained that I already paid for everything and can't change the dates.
  • She got upset and told me I was being "selfish" for not making accommodations.
  • Another coworker sided with her, saying I "should've been flexible because weddings are once in a lifetime." (I mean... hopefully, but still.)
  • Now there's tension in the office, and I feel like the bad guy for sticking to my plans.

  • But at the same time, I feel like it's unfair to ask me to eat hundreds of dollars just because she picked a date without checking first.
  • AITJ for refusing to change my vacation for her wedding?
  • IndependentMindedGal Will she cover the cost of your losses? If not, she can set another week, delay her own honeymoon, or work it out with the boss.
  • LibraryMouse4321 Who the h I plans a wedding without making sure they have the time off first?
  • Savings_Telephone_96 Tell her you'll move the dates if they reimburse you for all your costs. Otherwise, no.
  • ValleygirlNorCal NTA. It would've been one thing if you were doing a staycation and no one was being terribly inconvenienced in your family, etc. But having already incurred non- refundable expenses, and maybe plans that involve others taking the vacation with you, no harm, no foul on your part.
  • throwRA-nonSeq since a Wedding is a bigger deal than a Vacation I mean, okay sure, maybe if both events are happening to the same person, lol. The value of either of those things does not transfer.
