  • A woman eats her lunch outside with her laptop.
  • My boss gets upset with me every time I take my entire 1 hour lunch break.

He always make some passive aggressive comment about how "some people really need their full break time huh" when I came back at exactly 1 hour. Bro what? That's literally what a break is for.
  • He will also try and guilt trip me into getting back to work like slaps his knees "well we better get back to work, you keep on sitting, the delivery came but we will handle it for you"
  • I work retail and we're always understaffed but that's not my problem to solve by cutting my legally required break short. The entitlement is wild wild wild So sick of that lazy smartass f I wanna punch him in the throat
  • Im_Doc • 2d ago . Next time he does it, agree with him. "Looks like some people need their full break time, huh?" "Yep. They sure do." (If he continues, include) "Especially since it's mandated by local labor laws that all employers are required to follow."
  • knee slaps "well we better get back to work then" "Alright boss. I'll join in once my break is through." Hold this line & your boundary. Be professionally petty right. back. If this continues or worsens. Send an email to your boss, his boss, & CC HR (bcc
  • your private email) to get in writing that you are allowed to take your full breaks. Ask for clarification. Play dumb. 'Hey boss. Just checking that I am allowed to take the full amount of my breaks (paid & unpaid.' I'd like clarification because on x,y,z dates & times, you told me to get back to work before my allotted break time was over. Please clarify.' If they call or talk to you in person, write a follow- up email.

  • Gazman_3333 · 2d ago . Is your lunch break unpaid? Because if it is then he's a - moron because unpaid means he isn't having to pay you. If you do what he says, that means you're clocking back in early and he has to pay you for that.
  • I get a 30 minute unpaid lunch at my job and if I don't take it either that means I need to clock out 30 minutes early or get overtime. So they really push us to take our breaks and they do not bother us when we are on them.
  • • V1per73 1d ago Just be careful around this Some years back, I had a real a hle of a plant manager. He'd get verbally ab ive, cause production delays then blame it on me or the other guy in our section, and get verbally ab ive. He'd use my former military service to try
  • and shame me. One day I'd had just enough, and he was seriously invading my space (less than a foot from me yelling) and said some pretty nasty things. He'd ask me a question, then cut me off not letting me answer, then yell at me for not answering. I very quietly and calmly told him to get the f out of my face and
  • to not physically corner me again. I then went directly to HR, told them he was causing a toxic and stressful work environment, was discriminating against me as as veteran, and was being verbally and physically threatening. They pulled that camera footage, watched it and listened to the audio of the exchange. I was given a paid
  • leave of absence pending investigation. A week later, I was laid off due to cutbacks, instructed to apply for unemployment, and given two weeks pay. They said they'd call me back if I was needed. Found out later from one of the girls in the office that the footage was erased and I was laid off the "right way" to avoid a lawsuit". That d khead kept his job and retired from there two years later.
  • Nobody in upper management or HR are on your side. Never forget that.
  • . Satin_gigolo • 2d ago Over talking is a good strategy make it annoying for him. When he asks about your break launch into a huge annoying story about everything did and ate, details lots of details. And absolutely leave on your break, always leave. Take lots of
  • bathroom breaks, there's really nothing they can do about that. It really helps if the other staff likes you so be yourself and always kind, so if the boss is an a hole it stands out. But the most important in customer service is to every once in while go out of your way for a customer just enough for it to get back to boss in the form of a good review. Tricks of the trade my friend enjoy.
  • chris32457 • 2d ago I'd find another job and then when you do that, explain to your bosses boss why you left.
  • Boomer_kin • 2d ago . "Sure I can come back early since you authorized overtime and I am not leaving early." When he stammers and says well no I didnt you say all innocently "You are not suggesting I work for free and cause a labor law violation would you?"
  • TheUsoSaito • 1d ago I always counter with "I could always leave early if I take a shorter lunch".
  • Kamiken 2d ago . "Must be nice to be paid to bother people during their legally mandated break. slaps knee Guess you should get back to work, you keep on talking, the delivery came but don't worry the skeleton crew will handle it for you."
  • billy_lam26 · 2d ago • Embrace it then, I'd definitely do that. "Yup, I LOVE going on my hour long, company mandated lunch break. Was I not entitled to it according to the company handbook?"
  • wrong_decade_ · 2d ago • You're in the trenches of retail, you deserve every second of that hour break. He's salary, you're hourly.
  • AvailableTowel • 2d ago . Depending on your situation go sit in your car or outside or off campus? This isn't a defense of your boss, but may help you actually enjoy your break.
  • ShadowsWandering · 2d ago If you're always understaffed then you're not understaffed. That's the number of staff that they want. Don't let them gaslight you into thinking that you need to work harder to make up for their failure to hire or retain people
  • Imaginary-Friend-228 2d ago Leave the building to take your lunch. Ignore the comments or say "oh I don't work unpaid" or "I have great time management skills so I don't need to work unpaid overtime"
  • No_Pineapple6086 2d ago . Time to fire up the job search. And be careful with this one, I bet he's building a case
  • JohnnySkidmarx • 2d ago "So, you want me to take a 30- minute lunch instead and then leave 30 minutes early at the end of the day?"
  • Swiggy1957 • 2d ago "Gotta take it, or I'd have to report the company for wage theft. Do you have any idea how far back they go for that?"
