'I didn’t rescue him, he rescued me': Person who came to the shelter "just to look" ends up adopting an 8-year-old cat who has been at the shelter the longest, now she realizes that she's actually the one who was saved

One thing that we always talk about here on ICHC is that cats adopt their humans, not the other way around. And we mean it. Maybe non-cat owners wouldn't understand, but it's true. And we mean that in the full sense. When you say that you are going to adopt a cat, you are also saying that you are going to change its life, that you are going to make their life better, happier, fuller. When we say that our cats adopt us, that is exactly what we mean - that they make our lives better, happier, fuller. 

We couldn't imagine our lives without them. But sometimes, we forget. Every once in a while, maybe when our cats are being more mischievous than usual, we forget to say thank you to them for being in our lives. And then we see a story like this one - so raw in its honesty, and we remember again. Yes, we didn't rescue out cats, our cats are the ones who rescued us.

    Two years ago, I walked into the shelter just to look*.* I was going through one of the hardest periods of my life burned out from work, newly single, and honestly, feeling really lost. I didn't expect to adopt a pet that day. I thought maybe cuddling a few kittens would lift my spirits for a minute.

    But then I saw him. A scruffy, slightly chubby orange tabby with one ear that flopped just a little to the side. He looked like he'd been through some stuff too. His name was Biscuit.

    He was lounging like he owned the place, but the second I approached, he rolled over, stretched out his paws to me, and let out the softest, croakiest meow I've ever heard. The volunteer told me he'd been there the longest of any of the cats over 8 months and most people passed him by because of his age (he was 8 at the time) and funny ear.

    Fast forward to today: Biscuit is sprawled on the couch next to me, snoring gently, his funny little ear twitching in his sleep. He follows me from room to room like a dog, chirps at me every morning for his breakfast, and curls up on my chest every night before bed.

  • Sometimes, it really is just meant to be like this. He waited a long time to find his match, but it was worth it. Hearing this is how we know that this cat is going to be one of the happiest cats in the world. Because you're right - we should be at least as thankful to them as they are to us.

  • It really is amazing the difference that animals can make in our lives. Cats are known to be calm animals, soft, ones whose love has to be earned, and that love, that calmness, it's worth everything, and it changes everything too.
