'I begged her not to go through with this': 26-year-old refuses to bail out mom after she co-signs loan for her younger brother's work truck and struggles financially

There are usually limits on family helping family, especially when finances are involved.

So long as you have an otherwise decent relationship, it is not unreasonable to expect that close relatives will want to assist you when you end up in a difficult spot. However, it is usually sensible to have a limit on that generosity—when it goes beyond a certain point, there is every chance that it will come back to bite you.

It can be very difficult to say no and put up boundaries when it comes to those closest to us, but it is often a necessity. There are only certain circumstances where taking without giving back is acceptable; otherwise, the recipient is likely to drag other people down with them. Being kind is important with those that you love, but sometimes the best kindness is saying no. The situations that can arise when you don't are enough to make anybody have regrets.

  • I did some side work at his site, repairing his GC's semi truck, literally every material is hauled through other subs or by the GC himself... He could have gotten a cheap 1/2 truck and it would be more than enough.

    Internally-Candid NTA - play stupid games, win stupid prizes. She took the risk and didn't listen to the advice of her two closest family members, everything went poorly and now she's wanting to listen. She should go to a financial advisor, at least she might listen to them first time round.

  • My suggestion: 1. Repo truck. Take FICO hit for repossession while being upside down. 2. Write down ALL debts. Mortgage, whatever she will owe on truck after repo, credit cards. 3. Does she need to file for bankruptcy or downsize. 4. DO NOT LEND HER ANYTHING.

Your mother is in a financial mess, and that's partly because she and your dad didn't get proper insurance on the house to cover the survivor in case of death. Also, why didn't your parents have life insurance policies? Your father was also an idiot. Having cosigned for that stupid loan is only part of her problem.

  • LittleBack6016 She made her bed, now lie in it. The husband and son told her it was a bad idea but she felt she was smarter than everyone else. Also, I'd bet that the uncle was a well known screw up when he was asking for a co signer. What did mom do? Enabled that guy to be a loser yet again. Why should he stop being a screw up when there's people who constantly enable him? Let the truck be repossessed, lesson learned.

The villain here is your uncle and your mom hopefully learned a very important lesson.   • The banks knew your uncle couldn't service that loan so they needed a sucker on the hook for it. Hopefully she doesn't do anything dumb like take out a HELOC or take proceeds from selling the house to pay for the truck. You don't have to give her any money, just stop her from doing anything that will make things worse for her (if she'll listen to you)
