‘I’m just trying to survive the last few days until I’m officially gone’: Woman quits her retail store job, sending her manager into a rage spiral and making her last days tense

  • How do i survive my toxic boss? I am quitting and she is furious

    BOSS
  • I work in a small retail store with a manager who honestly shouldn't be managing anyone.
  • She's extremely volatile - yells at staff in front of customers, uses sarcasm to humiliate people, and twists things we say.
  • I recently handed in my notice because I can't handle the stress anymore. Now she's telling people I'm "too sensitive" and that I said I come to work "to relax," which isn't true.
  • What I actually said was that after a stressful week at university, it's nice to switch my brain to something else.
  • Somehow that turned into gossip fuel. But honestly, my situation isn't even the worst. The other employees have it worse than me.

  • A couple of years ago, after one coworker had an argument with her, the manager threatened to kill herself because of my coworker.
  • HR was never told about it, but all of the colleagues know about this situation. Honestly, this is none of my business so I won't tell HR either.
  • She still talks down to everyone and acts like a ticking time bomb. Today my coworker texted me saying the manager is "super tense and mad" after she figured out the reason I am quitting.
  • So I'm already anxious about working with her tomorrow. I'm just trying to survive the last few days until I'm officially gone.
  • Has anyone here dealt with a manager like this? How did you get through your final days without breaking down?
  • BOSS
  • I know she will be ped when I will come to work, an argument may start..
  • Acoustic Providence Seriously You're quitting! Who cares? Be like Elsa and let it go just pretend you're a gray rock and do not react to her AT ALL. Smile politely, wrap up your tasks, and the entire time inside your head just pick a song or mantra that you keep repeating over and over until the day's over. Here are a few internal track suggestions: Break my stride Stronger Unstoppable STFU (a personal fave)
  • OP Jumpy_Reputation 1986 This is the positivity that I needed! Thank you for taking your time to write this
  • CharacterSorbet214 They are all so terrible, it's unreal. I bet she is a woman.
  • OP Jumpy_Reputation 1986 She is!! And in her mid 60s i think! Just wonderful..
  • George The13th You're already quitting. Why stress. Get your last paycheck and good riddance to that boss and that company. If you have to argue, then argue. What is she going to do, fire you?
  • Hour_Coyote2600 Before you go, go to HR, and let them know. Request an exit interview (if the do that). Let them know that this manager is exposing them to potential future litigation.
  • cubanito_nj u gonna stress for when u know ur already out. If she gives you too much sh and u can't handle it, then tell her if she doesn't relax you're gonna walk out. You have all the power now. Remember that!
  • Spacecowboyv2 Then finish the argument and leave. Fear of something happening is much different than it happening. You sound young, these things do and will happen often. Take it with a grain of salt, you will have future bosses like this and maybe worse. Hold your ground, do your work and let them make fools of themselves. Then clock out and don't let them take ANY of your thoughts for the night. They don't pay rent in your head and I highly doubt they are thinking of you on their off time.
  • seal3600 I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Your manager's behavior is completely unprofessional and potentially dangerous. Here's what I'd recommend: 1. Protect yourself immediately - Document everything (dates, times, exact words used) - Keep all communication in writing when possible - Save screenshots/texts showing hostility - Have witnesses present for interactions 2. Know your rights - This likely qualifies as a hostile work environment - Retaliation for giving notice is illegal - You hav
  • Admirable Rice23 I would probably jsut ghost at this point. You gave notice appropriately and professionally, and she is continuing to lash out and blame you for sh, so just don't go back. She is welcome to make up BS stories about how and why you left but you shouldn't have to take this kind of ab e, especially at home getting txts from people sharing more scuttle-bat gossip about this horribly toxic manager. If you really care, send another email to THEIR boss, explaining that you left because
  • blu3m00n1991 You're already leaving. There's no reason why you should be stressed. She's just upset she no longer has that kind of power over you. Don't give her back that power. Now if she does want to argue with you just tell her that your 2 weeks is a formality. I hope she does end up doing something stupid like fire you outright. Because that means you're entitled to the two weeks pay from unemployment. And most workplaces have to pay an increase in unemployment premiums if their terminated
  • Spalding Penrodthe3rd Why are you stressing ??? You are quitting anyway tell her off. Don't let her get you.
