My husband and I have a 17 year old cat. He has been my childhood cat and I took him with me when I moved in with my husband. When I was growing up the cat never slept in my bed. He preferred to sleep on the living room couch and that was ok with me, I never had to work to keep him out or anything. I didn't like cat hair and litter in my sheets.

When my husband and I started dating he would bring my cat into the bed with us, insisting I was cruel not to allow him. I could tolerate it for a few days of the week just to make my boyfriend happy. Once we got married we moved into a studio and my husband would bring the cat into

bed every night, even when I told him I would prefer him sleeping on the couch or a cat bed like he always had done his whole life. Once he was used to being in bed at night he started jumping up on his own and being in a studio there was no way to keep him off.

He would track cat litter in the sheets, even with a litter mat. He sheds and even though I brush him daily he's a long haired cat and there's always fur everywhere. I was excited to move into a two bedroom apartment because I thought I could finally start sleeping without the cat again, but my husband opens the door and lets him in every night.

We argue about this constantly and I'm writing this post from the couch as my cat is currently sleeping in my spot next to my husband. I get rashes and itch all night from the 'low tracking' litter in our bed and my husband has stated he'd rather sleep with the cat than me if he has to choose. I actually sometimes feel like he loves the cat more than me.

Everyone I know has either said I'm being dramatic or being cruel. My husband says it's almost abusive to make cats sleep alone, and I just don't agree with that. Am I being crazy here? I'm just very tired and I'm sick of sleeping alone.

sm... Put a tall cat tree in your bedroom. The kitty might prefer sleeping up high. The cat feels safe, plus it can see you both. Hauspanther sells decorative shelves that kitty can climb on. They aren't cheap, but you don't need many. You can also make your own. Hang a couple over the bed.

SaltyCat Treats I get both of you here. your husband clearly adores the cat, but you're the one losing sleep and getting rashes, and that's not sustainable. it's not "abusive" to have boundaries with pets. Cats. are fine sleeping on couches, cat trees, etc. maybe compromise with a heated cat bed near your bed so everyone wins?

Plus-Ad-801 Buy different litter and let the cat sleep in the bed

thoughtlessFreak My cat sleep on the same spot on my bed all the time so I put a throw blanket there to keep the cat hair on the bed to a minimum. Maybe something like that may help if there's no way to keep him off the bed now.

DisMrButters Changing the litter might help. Husband can be responsible for keeping the bed clean. Maybe an extra top sheet that is easily removed? Husband can get an extra set of sheets and launder the bedding frequently?

Beautiful-Rough9... My cats sleep with us. I love it so much. Yes, it's hairy and sometimes I get litter on me. But one of my cats curls up on TOP of my body and purrs away while the other is happily curled up at our feet. I cherish these moments so much and it sounds like it means a lot to your husband as well.

Lucky_Ad2801 My partner and I had different views on sleeping with the cats. So for that reason, along with others, we had separate bedrooms, So I could sleep with the cats and my partner could sleep alone. If you have a second bedroom, just sleep in there and let your husband sleep with the cat. Problem solved.

autumnreckless I mean he's 17... but I'm partial to letting aging/disabled animals ruin my routines however it sounds like you're having sensory and health issues, which are completely valid and should not be overlooked.

I, no joke, keep a lint roller by the bed in case I come to sleep in a sensory nightmare. Making the bed every single day and only allowing the cats on top of the comforter has also helped a lot. But ultimately it's between the two of you if kitty is continued to be allowed in. Neither one of you is completely right or wrong.

I like what another commenter said about a cat tree... that might be the real compromise... however kitty may just keep being in bed since he's used to it now.

We switched to horse bedding pellets for litter and they have almost zero tracking. If you're breaking out from litter it's probably from additives for scent (similar to laundry detergent). This is probably happening on the couch and other surfaces too, but it's just more prominent in the bed.

asistolee Top sheet over the whole bed. Sleep under it. I've been doing this for years.

Arquen_Marille My cats have never slept in my bed. Can't do it. I would be awake all night, trying not to roll on them. My cats have always done fine with that. Personally I would start sleeping in the other bedroom.
