When do you think Elrond became proud of his daughter? Was it before or after the mortal love of her life became the King of Men?
Like all fathers, Elrond really was just looking out for his little girl, guarding her immortal elfish life and her future of crossing the seas to Valinor. When the reckless ranger of the north, an 87-year-old Aragorn, son of Arathorn, came and swept his babygirl off her feet, of course, Elrond was suspicious. He wouldn't know until later that Aragorn was the most exemplary of Men and wielded Narsil with more valiant pride than any other man before him. Pushing open both saloon doors to Elrond's heart, it was Aragorn's honor that finally won him over.
So while Arwen simped and swooned over the man of her dreams, Aragorn became the Man of everyone's dreams—a hero, an icon, and a King. So perhaps the next time someone questions your dating standards, let them know that Aragorn set the bar pretty high.
