Stepmom refuses to hand over her stepson's family heirloom gold rings after holding onto them for ‘safekeeping,’ then tries to give him other rings as a replacement: ‘This is a huge betrayal of trust’

We should always be able to trust our family members, but a story now and then will teach us that family isn't always something we can rely on.

Money and riches can make people do crazy things, so much so that they commit crimes at the expense of their family members. Too often, we are taught that we are supposed to respect our elders and "whatever I say goes" types. Younger generations were taught that they should allow others to walk all over them, emotionally and monetarily, because they don't deserve the same level of respect. In this story's case, this has everything to do with the way a now-adult child's family heirlooms get ripped from them by a stepfamily member under the guise of keeping the heirloom "safe".

This story teaches us, unfortunately, to remain wary of anyone whom we think might even slightly be looking to benefit from doing us wrong. The stepmom in the story below holds onto her stepson's gold rings, passed down to him by his grandma, only to refuse to give them back to him and later offers him cheaper rings. The stepson's biological father refuses to do anything about it, and now his sibling is reaching out to the internet to ask for legal recourse. Scroll to read the full story.

    Also we have no proof or evidence about the authenticity of the rings so everything is just hearsay, the police wouldn't act.

    The actual value of the gold is also not in question since the original ring was not 24k but something lower (22K maybe), the replacement rings were something of similar quality.

    woollySyntax It's not about the gold. It's about the sentiment and the betrayal. Those rings were your grandma's and your stepmom had no right to swap them out. Even if the value's the same, the meaning isn't. Your dad dismissing it as "just gold" is hurtful especially when it's something deeply personal to you and your brother.

    Mba1956 Yes, OP saying that the rings aren't 24 carat gold missed the point that 22 carat is as high a content as gold goes in rings. You can bet the 'replacements" are going to be 9 carat with a much lower value.

    Also gold with a value of $5000 a few years ago would be worth a lot more, probably at least double, at today's prices. Maybe they haven't been sold but just kept safe and they are now $5000 up on the deal.

    PearGlum1966 Threaten your dad and his now wife with the police. She was to keep the rings safe until required. These are not the rings, and she has tried to palm off some inferior crappy gold rings in place of the originals. Your dad is not better in this either. He is backing her behaviour and dismissing your concerns. Bring the police in and report the theft of your items.
