HOA gate-keeps children to avoid 'depleted candy' on Halloween night: 'Trick or treating will be limited'

For residents of this Nashville, TN community, outsiders aren't welcome on Halloween night.

Instead of crashing the rich communities to get an exceptional candy haul, this HOA-led neighborhood is insisting kids make other plans. 

If you want to get king-sized candy bars, cash, or other really great Halloween treats, you should head to the wealthiest neighborhood you can find. It's sure to be a great experience — a lot of times, these people deck out their houses to be extra festive, have elaborate costumes, and you can feel safe while wandering the brightly lit streets full of other trick or treaters. Still, just because people know they can head to the rich neighborhoods to trick or treat, doesn't mean they will. A lot of kids still like to stay in their own developments to trick or treat, or they'll head to a friend's house and go there. It's a lot of fun to see how your neighbors are going to dress up, and if you already know the area you're going to be wandering, you can sprint from house to house even faster. 

However, there are a bunch of Grinches at this one Nashville-based neighborhood, and they're clutching their pearls due to last year's influx of trick-or-treaters. Groups of little children dressed in costumes are knocking at your doors asking for candy? Terrifying!!!

They're being extra snippy about the whole thing, as they've detailed in a letter below. Instead of trick or treating until from after-school hours until 9 PM or so, this place is strictly limiting the little ghouls and goblins to a  6 PM - 8 PM time frame. They cited issues with property damage, which is a fair concern… but I can't help but wonder if they're just upset about Mischief Night, aka the night before Halloween, when kids will throw toilet paper into trees and sometimes egg cars. That's totally annoying, but my hot take is that you should just let kids be kids and let them have their fun, even if it means having to roll your eyes and break out the ladder to un-TP your trees. You're only little for so long, and no one should stop these little Princess Elsas and Blueys from getting buckets and buckets full of sweet treats.

    This person understands that the spirit of Halloween should be sharing with any and everyone who stops by your home!

    M... I love getting kids from outside our neighborhood. If it was restricted to just the kids who live here, there would only be around 30. With the visiting carloads, we get around 120. Last year, there were whole families who dressed up. They were adorable.

    a very well deserved, bad name. A designated Trick or Treat window? WTF! It starts when the sun goes down and ends when you turn off the porch light, decorations, or run out of candy. What kind of BS is this? They going to fine you if you keep giving out candy after 8 or start before 6?

    When are they going to start policing the street before school gets out? What stops you from picking up your kids friends/family from outside the neighborhood and driving them in. Do you need to provide papers if you are having an adult Halloween party on a Friday night? Get fined for it? This doesn't seem well thought out at all.

    This person asked another important question: how exactly will the HOA be determining who's allowed and who's banned? That seems destined to upset people, because no doubt some actual residents will be mistaken for intruding outsiders.

A couple miles away, on the other side of the railroad and the freeway, are a few poor neighborhoods with mostly black families. A lot of kids from that area come here for trick or treat. And

    anecdotally, I find them to be more polite and respectful than some of the local kids. It's great... Our street is super busy every year, lots of my neighbors (myself included) put up fun displays and sit outside watching all the kids in costume. We probably get 3-400 kids every year. And it's fucking amazing.

    It wouldn't surprise me to find out that, if there really have been problems with vandalism and misbehavior in OP's neighborhood, that it's kids from the neighborhood doing it. Also... They're telling residents they can't even have guests such as their kids' friends from school come to the neighborhood? Fuck that.
