My sister wanted my tuition fees to pay off her credit card debt

When I was 19 and in university, my sister was 23 and working a full time job.
  • 03
Sister was always the golden child, as she is the first grandchild in the family, and was spoiled rotten.
  • 04
Everything she asked for, she got. And she liked expensive things. Designer bags, shoes, clothes that my parents would buy for her.
  • 05
I was freelancing and working odd jobs since I was 15 because I felt bad for my parents that they spend so much on her, and whenever I would ask for something, my mom would say we don't have enough money, your sister throws tantrums and makes life difficult if we don't get her what she wants so please be a good kid and be thrifty.

I know now that I should have been angry at my parents. back then for clearly having double standards, and they're the ones who enabled her to become entitled but instead I was just resentful of my sister.
  • 07
Anywhoo, while she was working at that job she befriended a bunch of women who had sugar daddies that bought them expensive gifts.
  • 08
She started acting like them, talking like them, and naturally wanted to also dress like them and have the same luxury items.
  • 09
So she did, got a credit card and landed herself in debt. Talking 5 digits. One day as I was home I heard her cry yelling and screaming at my mom.
  • 10
I walked in the room just as she started yelling "INSTEAD OF PAYING FOR THIS FAILURE'S TUITION, USE THE MONEY TO PAY MY DEBT!!!" | was appalled, surely she didn't mean it??
  • 11
I stood there staring in the doorway of the room when she kept going, pointing at me.

"THIS UNGRATEFUL KID IS WASTING YOUR MONEY, SHE FAILED A COURSE, PUT HER IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE INSTEAD" I started crying and trying to defend myself, that I only failed. one course because I was genuinely having so many difficulties understanding it and keeping up.

That I had wanted to drop the course earlier that year but my sister told me not to and that she was going to help me (surprise surprise she never helped and by then it was too late to drop it).
  • 15
I spent the next couple of days terrified of the thought that any day now, my parents will stop paying tuition and I won't be able to finish my education and get my degree.
  • 16
My mom ended up paying her debt for her, and I remained in uni and got my degree.
  • 17
She learned nothing, she's still entitled, and I am still haunted and traumatized by that incident 15 years later

Plus_Data_1099 I bet she gas hidden debt or credit cards in your name is would do a credit check just to make sure

OP Fun-Aide2465 She's actually financially responsible now, thankfully. She still gets handouts sometimes from parents but it isn't as bad as it used to be. I can't tell about credit card debt, we don't really talk much anymore.

Tomj_Oad I hope you're low contact with your sis. She sounds exhausting.

OP Fun-Aide2465 I am now. There have been too many recurring issues between us due to our differences in personalities and values and I love her from a distance because my mental health can't deal with her there
  • 22
gritbiddy90 How is your sister doing now. Is she still the same? Hope you have done well for yourself.

OP Fun-Aide2465 She has significantly improved, financially responsible now. Still a bit entitled but life taught her to adjust. Thanks for asking! I'm also doing well, and I'm living comfortably.
