AITAH for not allowing new home buyers to come measure before closing?

1 (30f) denied a request from the buyers of our home to measure the living room for furniture.

I offered to send them measurements, but they have so far refused. For context, I'm here with 2 kids (2m, 4f) alone except for the weekend because my husband has been working where we're moving for a while.

We're a little less than 2 weeks from closing, and they've already had 3 fencers out to quote and brought their parents to a special showing.
  • 05
Plus, my son is sick, so I'm dealing with that on top of packing the house for a 400-mile move (again, by myself) and trying to keep up with the day-to- day stuff.
  • 06
So, AITAH? Eta: thanks for all the feedback already! First time home sellers, so we really don't know what's normal.
  • 07
Our agent has been great through the process, but hasn't exactly been clear with this kind of stuff.
  • 08
It doesn't help that I know one of the buyers and they are aware of our situation.

magic_crouton Nta. The buyers dont get free access to the house until they buy it. The fact you've put up with people there has been generous.

OP Upstairs Way8168 Thank you! At this point, I'm feeling very pushed out of my own home.

Illustrious-Horse276 Were extra visitations included in your contact? When we bought our first house, my realtor put in something like 3 visitations pre- closure, including the final walk- through. We used only 2. If it is in the contact you agreed to extra visitations, you may be out of luck. Otherwise, they are allowed (I believe) the final walk- through only. You could be nice, but it sounds like you have already been nice enough.

OP Upstairs Way8168 No extra provision in the contract except the final walk through.

PerspectiveKookie16 If an appraisal was done, the exact measurements of the room should be in that and they should have a copy already

OP Upstairs_Way8168 Agree! The appraiser was here yesterday (their bank dragged their feet for a little bit for some reason), and he was very thorough.

Smitten-kitten83 It would be nice but I totally get not doing it. You have a lot going on, they may be wanting a lot of different measurements to plan furniture. Really NAH sometimes peoples schedules, ect don't mesh.

OP Upstairs Way8168 With my son sick (virus leading to croup and being a snot machine), it really isn't a good time - any other time, sure, but we've also accommodated a few other things that I didn't mention already. They have kids, so the last thing I would want is them getting sick. Where they're measuring is where he spends most of his time throughout the day, so germ central.

mdsnbelle Why didn't they come during the home inspection? That's what my realtor had me do when I bought my house. Granted, it was vacant at the time, but I don't see why that would matter. You have to open the house for the inspector anyway, so them popping in wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience after that.

OP Upstairs Way8168 They were working during the inspection.

salaciouspeach The fact that you know the buyer is what's making this headache. I went through it, too. In a normal buying/selling situation, you two would never be talking directly. Every bit of communication would be going through your realtor who would be able to tell them what is reasonable and legal and what isn't. Trust me when I say that you need to tell them that ALL communication about the house go through your realtor. Trust me. I've been there. It gets worse unless you set this bounda

OP Upstairs_Way8168 Everything is going through our agent. She's just not clear in advising when asked if we should allow stuff like this.

saveyboy INFO. What does the sale contract say. A set amount of Visits is common. Not allowing them could complicate your sale.
  • 23
OP Upstairs_Way8168 No provisions for additonal visits besides the final walk through. Located in Tennessee, USA.

Alice Wunderbar NTAH. A lot goes into closing. They had opportunities to do this while viewing. If the realtor wants he can measure the door and send it to them. They generally make quite a nice payment when sold. If you don't feel pushed to do it, then don't. It sucks for the new home buyers but it's part of the process.

OP Upstairs Way8168 They had three showings, including the one with their parents, so I agree they had ample time to measure previously. I also really don't want anyone else getting sick. My son is likely contagious for as long as he's a snot machine.
