  • WIBTA if I got mad at my niece for using my perfumes?

Okay, this seems petty but I'm really tired of this, and I want to bring it to outsider perspectives.
  • I (F18) have had a lot of perfumes over the years. They're nothing extremely expensive, but they're mine and I don't really like having to buy new ones unless I have to because the last bottle ran out.
  • My niece (F13) lives with me, because her mom has five other kids and it's a two bedroom house.
  • The first time she used my perfumes was 2 years ago, and I asked her to stop.
  • She was using my perfumes as "air freshener" in my bedroom (and neglecting the actual can of air freshener that I keep in my room).
  • I told her that perfumes aren't used for air freshener, and that she was using way too much anyway.
  • The next time it happened was a few weeks after, we were on vacation together and she used it without asking and she used a LOT.
  • Young adult shrugging with a confused expression
  • When I walked into her room in the house we were staying in, it smelled extremely strongly of my perfume and she started denying that she used it.
  • At the time, I got a bit frustrated with her and told her that if she wanted to use it she needs to ask, not take it from my room without asking, and that she doesn't need to use so much.
  • That it was a waste. My cousin, my niece's mom and my mom said I was being a bit hard on her and that I wasn't being fair.
  • I felt bad and apologised and shrugged it off. Fast forward to right now. I keep a bottle of perfume in the bathroom because I use it sometimes when I'm going to go out, but not that often.
  • This bottle is a bottle that my mom gave me, that was almost completely full less than a month ago.
  • I leave my room, decide to shower, and an extremely overwhelming perfume smell hits me. As I'm setting my bottle of soap down I notice that the bottle is 3/4 empty.
  • I don't know how long she's been using it, but once again, this is mine and she knows that.
  • She has her own perfumes, she has her own scents. This is my only bottle and she insists on using it clearly.
  • Obviously, I'm going to make sure the perfume is no longer accessible to her and put it in my room because that's ridiculous.
  • A tray of perfumes
  • It's a big bottle and in less than a month it's almost completely gone and I've only used it probably twice.
  • She uses a lot of my products in the same way too (shampoo, soap, cocoa butter) when I accidentally leave them in the bathroom, and these are all products I personally pay for, and she has soaps and stuff like that that are hers or are used by everyone else in the family.
  • LatterEbb9760 I've raised 3 kids. Look up frontal lobe development. She is displaying normal behavior of increased risk taking and impulsive behaviors. Everyone thinks she knows she's doing something wrong, but she probably just thinks that OP doesn't wanna share with her.
  • OP kahlumi But I have offered to share.. that's the issue, it's that I ask her to ask me first and I also don't want her using so much that it's just a waste. If she asked and didn't use so much, I would have virtually no problem with it. Even if she wants to use my "good" perfumes, I would give it to her no problem if she just asked. It's not that I don't want to share
  • Prudent-Reserve4612 NTA, of course! She's old enough to know better, and she keeps doing it. Start hiding them somewhere else. Don't tell your mom or your aunt where, because they clearly won't back you up here.
  • Funny-Technician-320 NTA. You've been too soft. Make her replace what she's used then lock them away.
  • LayaElisabeth Go buy the nastiest 'eau de granny' (bonuspoints for the nastiest grandpa aftershave) and put that in an empty perfume bottle of yours and wait.. Bonus bonus points for durian aroma XD
