Neighbor leaves food outside their door after hearing a cat crying, only to find out the cat already belongs to the residents next door: ‘I assumed the cat was a stray’

  • Street Cat by a Green Door, title: "My neighbor opened their door and let the cat in"
  • Lost cat that isn’t actually lost

A few nights in a row i kept hearing constant meowing from my back yard for hours at a time.
  • i never saw the cat but i could hear it through my windows. After multiple nights i figured it was a stray so i went to the pet store and got some cat food to leave out and made a little bed out of a box and a blanket i had in my donation pile.
  • if it's already in my backyard might as well make sure its not starving and can have a comfortable spot to lay.
  • (and im pretty lonely so a cat would have been nice to have as a companion) the night i put everything out is the last time i heard the meowing.
  • figured i would leave the food out in case it came back. after 2 days the food was untouched and i would clean it all up after i came home from work.
  • came home from work that day and immediately fell asleep on the couch forgetting about the food.
  • tonight i heard faint repeated meowing! i ran to my back door and turned on my lights in the back yard.
  • Stray cat eating cat food
  • i saw the food was gone!! 5 seconds after i opened my door i heard my neighbor open their door and let the cat in.
  • that's when i pieced together the cat belongs to the neighbor that is on the other side of my wall.
  • am i the asshole for setting out food and making a bed for a cat i assumed was a strav?
  • it's freezing outside and i felt bad for it
  • Good_Government_1395 Nta. It was an act of kindness. But one word of advise. If you want to create a warm spot for this or a different cat, please use straw instead of a blanket. Blankets or any type of cloth will absorb moisture that will freeze in low temperatures. Straw will retain heat without that risk. Eta: I would stop putting out the food. You don't want to disrupt a feeding schedule or if the cat is on a special diet.
  • OP South_Green_5596 i live in a pretty dry area so i didn't even think about moisture! thank you for the tip! i will definitely start using straw instead of fabric
  • elvirablady I would mention that you've put a bed out to your neighbour (you can always say it's for something else) then if they are looking for their cat they know to ask you. If you drop it in a conversation, then great. My cat is a food hog and I have him on a strict diet for various health issues. As an owner I would be glad he's found (yet another bed) and that person knows not to feed him. You're NTA, but tread gently with this.
