Edinburgh homeowner fed up with neighbor, Duncan, who keeps parking 30–40 cm over their shared driveway line, so he parks his spare car exactly on the line, forcing neighbor into daily 15-point turns: 'Except Duncan apparently can't see lines'

  • Neighbour kept parking over the line

I'm 34M, live in a semi- detached house in Edinburgh. My neighbour Duncan is maybe mid-50s. We share a driveway - there's a line down the middle, his side and my side, pretty straightforward.
  • Except Duncan apparently can't see lines. Since he moved in about 2 years ago he's been parking maybe 30-40cm over onto my side.
  • Doesn't sound like much but my car is not small and it means I have to do this awkward angle thing to get in and out of my own drive.
  • Nearly scraped my wing mirror probably ten times. I asked him nicely. Three times. "Hey Duncan, would you mind parking a bit more to your side?
  • It's a tight squeeze for me." Each time he'd say "aye sure no problem" and then change nothing.
  • I left a note. Polite. "Hi neighbour, just a reminder about the parking line. Thanks!" Nothing.

  • I even showed him one day. Walked out when he was getting home, pointed at the line, pointed at his tyres clearly over it.
  • He said "och it's barely anything, you've got plenty of room." And walked inside. Fine Duncan.
  • Fine. So here's the thing. I have two cars. My main car that I use for work, and this old 2003 Vauxhall Corsa that technically runs but I mostly keep for emergencies and because I'm too lazy to sell it.
  • It's taxed and insured. Completely legal to be on the road. I started parking the Corsa on my side of the drive.
  • Right up against the line. Perfectly, precisely on my side. Not a centimetre over. But right.
  • There. Duncan's BMW is big. With my Corsa exactly on the line and his car in its usual spot slightly over, he now has approximately zero room to manoeuvre.
  • The first morning I watched from my window as he tried to reverse out. It took him 15 turns.
  • Back and forth, back and forth, getting redder in the face each time. I had my coffee.
  • It was glorious. He came over that evening. "Your car is in the way." I said "no it's not.

  • It's exactly on my side. Check the line." He couldn't argue. Because I'm right. I'm completely within my rights.
  • He's the one who's been over the line for two years. It's been three weeks now.
  • He does the 15-point turn every single day. Sometimes I work from home - I'm a sound designer so I can do a lot remotely - and I'll just happen to be by the window with my tea watching him struggle.
  • He's started glaring at me when we cross paths. Hasn't said a word though. Because what can he say?
  • "Please move your car that's completely legally parked so I can continue parking over the line"?
  • My wife thinks I'm being childish. She's probably right. I don't care. Should've stayed on your side Duncan.
  • 1 quirky1 Bravo! That is wonderfully petty. You're not being childish. You tried doing it the proper way. You found an effective way to deal with Duncan since he is exceedingly inconsiderate and ignorant.
  • error23_snake I had a similar problem where my neighbour would turn into her side of the driveway by swinging over my half. Wouldn't have been a problem except she was getting closer and closer to hitting my car (which was parked as far over to my side as possible). I put up a fence on my side of the driveway boundary. So far she's hit it with her car 3 times.
  • SarahCF30 My kind of petty. Keep it up! On my street there is parking allowed on only one side of the street - the side I live on. It's clearly signed. There is a neighbor who lives across the street. When he moved in and for a while afterwards he would regularly park on the no parking side. I would pull my car out of my driveway and position my car legally directly across from his car. This would effectively block the street as there wasn't enough room for any vehicle to pass thru. Inevitably s
  • happiestcoffee Glorious! BMW drivers share many of the same traits the world over. What an asshat.
