Sister's "anxious" cat destroys brother's house, he gives her a harsh reality check and demands she leave the feisty feline at home for good: ‘[She] clearly knows nothing about feline temperament’

There are some cats that are very dog-like in purrsonality and travel well, but most prefer to stay at home in their comfort zone. Cats do not like change. Even moving their litter box two inches to the left can cause a whole drama of meowtrageous purrportions. Don't even get us started on bringing in a new piece of furrniture. 

A lot of people who read this story are going to paint the brother to be the bad guy, but really, as cat owners, we know that he's actually the good one. His sister brings her "anxious" cat with her everywhere, and he leaves a trail of destruction wherever he goes. She claims he gets anxiety being home alone, but we know that he's actually anxious because she keeps uprooting him and putting him in strange places. The brother puts his foot down and demands she leave her feisty feline at home for his own sake. She just can't seem to get it.

Cats are not dogs. They're not built for constantly changing environments and meeting new people all the time. They don't like to travel. They like feeling safe in a space they know like the backs of their paws. A secure cat is a calm cat, and a calm cat fills a home with love.

  • Of course the cat is unhinged, he's stressed! Imagine being in a new place all the time, never knowing where your safe spots are, no routine, and constantly being shoved into cat carriers, which aren't fun for any cat.

    my one cat prefers to travel with me and is a very good boy. my other cat is a tasmanian devil who does not come anywhere (granted, like most cats, she is much more comfortable staying home anyway). I would not subject to someones home to her wildness.

  • It's hard because nowadays our social media feeds are filled with cats that go with their owners everywhere, but in reality, most cats would not be able to handle that much stimulation. Those cats have been exposed to this kind of life since they were kittens, and even still we suspect that some of them would rather be snuggled safely at home instead.

    tarbearjean 15h ago Not wrong. Some cats do genuinely get separation anxiety but unfamiliar settings can also be a huge stressor. It's a tricky situation for her but she can't make it your problem. Can she stay.

    at a pet friendly hotel or Airbnb? Can she keep the cat locked in her room with her at night? Can she get a two way camera so she can check on the cat while she's gone? Or better yet a cat sitter? Lots of alternatives here.

    FrauAgrippa 15h ago Your sister sounds like an overall terrible pet owner. If her cat has anxiety when it's left alone that's because she isn't providing it with the correct enrichment. If it actually has an anxiety disorder then she isn't providing it with the correct environment or medication to mitigate that either.
