  • "I can't have all their pets living with me"
  • AITAH for not letting my parents move in with me?

So I (30M) recently had to move in a 3 bedroom apartment. I live alone with my dog.

  • Recently my parents got evicted because they weren't paying their rent. When trying to find where they could stay they asked me.
    via wizzquizz
  • I told them they could but I can't have all their pets living with me. For context they have 7 cats and 2 dogs.
    via wizzquizz
  • I told them some of the animals could come but I wouldn't let their big golden doodle stay.
    via wizzquizz
  • This golden doodle is very poorly trained. He's not outdoors trained, He's really bad about resource guarding toys, and he has torn up furniture to the point of no repair.
    via wizzquizz
  • I didn't want the doodle destroying my apartment or honestly more important to me taking away my and my dog's peace.
    via wizzquizz
  • After telling them they couldn't bring the doodle they decided to live out of their car.
    via wizzquizz
  • They also anytime someone has asked about where they are staying they tell them they are living out of their car and it's all my fault.
    via wizzquizz
  • I've tried working around this. Other family members have volunteered to watch the doodle, my mom's job has even offered kenneling for him for free (she works at a dog grooming/boarding place).
    via wizzquizz
  • I spoke with my land lady about the doodle. Trying to see if it could stay outside in my yard, because that's at least gives it more room to run.
    via wizzquizz
  • she pointed out it living with me violates my lease and renters insurance and told me no.
    via wizzquizz
  • I'm honestly starting to feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. My immediate family thinks I'm being an unreasonable asshole.
    via wizzquizz
  • I just need to know if I am or not. Other info that may matter, I have a spare room but it doesn't have furniture.
    via wizzquizz
  • I have allowed them to store they belongings at my place. I have also agreed they despite what my land lady says I will watch some of the cats, I can't handle all 7 but I could do 1-3.
    via wizzquizz
  • Edit for clarification: My land lady and insurance is violated by the dog being a big dog.
    via wizzquizz
  • She recommended not taking any animals in because I may get stuck with them, that's what I meant by despite what my land lady says.
    via wizzquizz
  • I'm allowed to have 5 pets. So my 1 dog plus some of their cats is fine.

  • it will cause my renter's insurance to go up if they aren't out in a month though.
    via wizzquizz
  • This is why she advised against it. Also as far as my other immediate family members.
    via wizzquizz
  • My brother is the only one I am excusing because he also took in furniture and my littlest sister, I offered her to stay with me as well but she picked his house.
    via wizzquizz
  • The rest of my family is saying they shouldn't and can't because I have room where as they don't.

  • One lives in a camper and the other lives in a one bedroom apartment.

  • _NemesisPrime If they can't afford rent, how are they taking care of 9 pets?

  • AwarenessOnly7993 NTA. It's funny how other people pile on but don't offer their space. You ARE risking your tenancy by adding the extra cats - don't be surprised when your landlord finds out that you yourself get evicted. Don't follow your parent's lousy example.
    via AwarenessOnly7993
  • DescriptionFew6118 Nta. It's their fault they're living out of their car, not yours. And you'd better be careful. Going against your landlady's rules will get you evicted and living out of their car with them.

  • GemGlamourNGlitter NTA. Your parents are adults. They need to figure it out. They should surrender their pers to good homes since they are living in their car! There is no excuse to be hoarding animals when they aren't even responsible enough to pay rent.

  • Commercial_Board6680 NTA. But if you want to keep living in this flat, I wouldn't even think of violating the rules or you'll be living in your car. Your parents fucked up, and now they're blaming you. Cute. They have viable options with boarding at work or with other family matters, but it's still your fault. Please don't allow them to emotionally manipulate you. Again, where do you and your dog live if you give in to these selfish people?

  • cgrobin1 It is against your lease is the simplest answer. It takes the issue out. Of your hands. What gets me is why weren't they paying rent? Nta

  • NTA star_b_nettor Your landlady said no, that you would be violating your lease and your insurance. That is enough reason. Those who are choosing to gang up on you can take them and their menagerie in themselves.

  • Only-Readit You should let them know that your apt has rules about how many pets can live there or else you risk getting evicted.
