  • HR director accidentally copied me on list for layoffs...

Received an email with subject along the lines of "reorganization restructuring " from head of HR. I click on it thinking this was another reorg announcement and to my surprise I start reading and see 5 names one of them being mine and then email string back and forth of others and other work
  • down of cost cutting etc etc for the year.... I was like whaaaaat? I didn't think this was intended for me then 5 minutes later HR lady emailed trying to recall that message saying oh please disregard your name was on there in error. Like holy crap. She mistakenly CC'ed me on this!!!!
  • She was probably trying to find my name in outlook address book then forgot about it. So here I sit, boss called me helped explain but really w ended up telling me eventually it's true. I saw the list, I feel horrible, my coworkers and I saw my name. Years working here. I'm devastated at the lack of integrity and now what do I do? I know I can look for job but wow! My stress anxiety is through the roof to have my eyes see something like this. Advice?
  • Commenters gave their sympathies and reassurance.

illiquidasshat It's over! It's actually probably a blessing you found out this way-saves you and your boss of having an extremely awkward conversation Get as many references as you possibly can from people you think are decent, exchange contact info, and work feverishly to get the next opportunity
  • testBunny93 That absolutely sucks. Like you said yourself, nothing left to do but look for a new job. I wish I had a better advice to give.
  • MizzGee They will be more understanding when you load up on dental work, Dr. visits, etc. And be sure to do that now, while you have insurance. Get your vision appt completed.

  • Quirky_Let_7975 Try and leave on good terms, if you want your manager as a reference. Otherwise, get someone senior or another manager to be your reference. Nothing else can be done except try and collect as much non-NDA or common examples or
  • templates or other proofs of work that are non- confidential that you can use for your work portfolio or examples of prior work that you can show to future employers. Start building up skills and getting certifications on company time while doing the minimum amount of work necessary to close off the remaining days. of your employment.
  • With the job market the way it is, all the best in your job search for another job.
  • SnooGuavas4531 I'm very sorry about your impending layoff. I think the bro move is to tell everybody else on the list that they're being laid off to you. You're already being fired, may as well help everybody else.
  • bad_wolf_420 When are the layoffs happening? First, use as much of your PTO as you can. Second if you still have the email forward it to your personal email. Along with any documents and other emails you want to have.
  • After that it really depends on how vindictive you want to be. I know everyone is going to say don't burn your bridges and so on but the most that the company your at can or will do when it comes to references is confirm that you worked there.
  • Personally I'm a burn the bridge down and salt the earth type of person. I password protected any documentation that I needed to do my job. I wouldn't say i refused to train anyone on my job functions but let's just say the training was bare minimum with an outline of procedures leaving out important details.
  • Childish.... Yes Unprofessional ... possibly but I'm not feeling bad about it. I learned the hard way that loyalty in corporate America is a one way street.
  • saltyhasp Actually this is good, you got the earliest possible warning. Ask your manager how much time you have. Also, it is better then come in one day and finding out or badge does not work or you can't login and being escorted off the property. There is no good
  • way to find out your not valued, or at least not valued enough. Be positive, move on with grace. If nothing else, you now have a good story.
  • myusername2017 Walk around your office with pen and paper and ask coworkers if you can use them for references. You can write down name spellings and phone numbers and they might all say yes because they saw the email too. (Not email as you don't know when they'll fire you now you've seen it, use paper) Bonus it will make hr feel awkward but nothing they can do about it.
  • nancylyn Are they giving severance? Start thinking about whether you would prefer applying for unemployment OR how much of a severance package you would need to live until you can find a new job.
  • This will be one or the other . If you accept the severance package they will require you to give up the ability to get unemployment. So you have to choose carefully. MAKE SURE any severance package includes continuing your health insurance for as long as possible...ask for 6 months and negotiate for 3 or 4 months.
  • If they don't offer you a severance then immediately apply for unemployment. Start prepping now. Also get your resume freshened up.
  • Gzxt The point in time when you realise that your hard work, integrity, respect and trust are a one way street. You are no longer a 'valued employee' and now a problem to be dealt with. At least you have warning in advance. Small comfort. Been there. Concentrate on your CV and job hunting. At least it's after Christmas, hopefully before you've committed to on going expenditure. Good luck with it.
  • Known_Ratio5478 Anytime a company is considering layoffs everyone not salary is on it. It doesn't matter how useful or expert you are. Really HR person here is the only one that should be on that list according to this story.
  • PlumPat61 Return it to the HR person saying, I don't think this was intended for me and CC the others on the list.
  • iluvcats17 I would be grateful you found out now instead of the day you are let go. And immediately update your resume and linked in profile and start applying for jobs. Leave as soon as you find a job if you can find one before you are laid off.
