  • Woman at book club demands I stop bringing homemade snacks because hers "look bad" in comparison

I'm part of a neighborhood book club, about 12 women, we meet twice a month. Everyone takes turns hosting and its expected that the host provides some snacks and drinks.
  • I (34F) really like baking so when its my turn to host I usually make stuff from scratch - cookies, brownies, little sandwiches, whatever fits the book theme. Its fun for me and people always seem to enjoy it.
  • Last meeting was at "Diana's" house (late 40s, kind of intense personality). She put out store bought cookies and some cheese and crackers. Totally fine, no judgment from me.
  • Sliced mango in clear glass bowl
  • But apparently she's been judging ME because after the meeting she pulled me aside and said "we need to talk about the snack situation." She said my homemade stuff makes her store bought snacks "look bad" and its making her feel inadequate as a host.

  • I was confused and said I wasn't trying to show anyone up, I just like baking. She said going forward everyone should stick to "simple store bought options" so its "fair to everyone" and no one feels pressured.
  • I said that seems silly, people should bring whatever their comfortable with. She got really huffy and said if I "insist on being extra" then maybe I shouldn't come to book club anymore.
  • Some of the other women heard and jumped in saying they LIKE my baking and Diana is being ridiculous. Diana said their "ganging up on her" and left her own book club early.
  • Now there's drama in the group text about whether we should have "snack rules" and Diana is threatening to quit the club she literally founded. Is this real life? Its just cookies.
  • Aggressive_Fly_8377 Then have a book club without her, simple
  • Renzieface "Actually, I'm glad Diana brought it up! I was going to speak to her about how it's not fair that some of us put in effort and make the snacks special while others foist their pantry leftovers on us. I think we should have a rule that snacks are a direct reflection of us as people, and there should be homemade options at all gatherings. Diana has decided that we're not worthy of snacks without barcodes on them, so I say she's banned from all club gatherings going forward!" /s
  • ThelnjuredBear I seriously can't imagine complaining about having free baked goods while talking about a book with other people who like to read. That's like 2 of my favorite things to do! Lol. Snack rules seem crazy to me, especially if nobody in the group has dietary or allergy concerns.
  • Rockpoolcreater When they ask for suggestions for the next book to read suggest one on baking.
  • Soggywallet94 Is this the real life? No this is just cookies.. Caught in a book club No escape from store bought goodies Open your eyes Look up to the skies and seeeeee I'm just a baker I need no sympathy Bakecause I'm easy come easy dough Heat on high heat on low
  • Valuable-Job-7956 If Diana quits book club, that just means more homemade snacks for the rest of you, I would chalk that up as win win situation
  • BlueberryOk3969 Let her throw her tantrum. It she wants to leave let her. Shes an adult not a child
  • bubbagnu People are crazy. Folks be getting shot in the face and Diana is worried about book club snacks.
