Woman returns to elderly parents' home to show her young daughter their family heirlooms, only to clash with her sister, who unexpectedly shows up, reclaiming the shared childhood toys after years of disinterest: 'She said they were originally hers'

It's interesting that the older we get, the more we seem reminisce about the memories of our childhood.

Suddenly, every finger-drawn painting and American Girl doll begins to hold a lot more value than it did in the 5th grade. And if we're lucky enough to have parents who hold on to those childhood gems and trinkets, we can have something of our past to bring into our present, and perhaps even share with our children one day. As the years pass, many of us quickly learn that we spent most of our young adult life trying to find our passionate and playful inner child, before the world tried to change us. 

Every person is different and may find childhood sentiment in many different forms: toys, photographs, or even childhood homes. But unfortunately, it is slightly more difficult to store a childhood home in the second shelf of our basement cupboard…So, as irrelevant as those toys and photographs may feel at the time, it is important you hold on to them, or hope that your parents do, until you realize their importance. 

We are shaped by our memories, and everything we touch, eat, or are interested in as a child holds some type of meaning. Many of us, if we're lucky, get to share those same things with our siblings…However, where it sometimes gets tricky is how the division of those items and potential family heirlooms will be divided one day…and whose future children will get to dress up and play with "mom's" American Girl doll, or wear "dad's" Football Jersey when both daughters and sons loved and shared them equally…

  • When we were children my parents also bought her some American Girl things, but, given the age difference, my mom let me have free reign with everything except for her doll as soon as my sister stopped playing with dolls.

  • FustianRiddle I wouldn't rely on OP to know the intricacies of their sister taking their parents' things. They could very well have talked about it and agreed to it without OP knowing because as they said it's not really any of their business.

  • regularforcesmedic I'd recommend visiting seperately from your sister and taking the time to move the things you cherish into a storage near your home. I think YOR because you know who you're dealing with. Stop expecting someone else...you know what your sister is like.

  • OP always__alright You're right. I'm just struggling because I was so young I don't necessarily remember what was hers or mine. Which doesn't matter, my mom is now helping us sort. It's not my sister's fault that I don't know, though I'd argue she's had 8 extra years to grab it. It is what it is.

You can't be that attached to this stuff if a) you're 32, b) it's sitting in your parents garage, c) by virtue of age + living out of state... had PLENTY of opportunities to take this stuff with you so your sister wouldn't get her hands on it. Take your stuff and be done with it, but hiding it is ridiculous.
