For the server, the unexpected week off was the most relaxing time he’d had in years. He slept late, watched movies, spent time with friends and his girlfriend, and enjoyed a break from stress and alarms.
On Friday night, the owner called again, this time sounding panicked. The restaurant was overwhelmed and so short-staffed that even dishwashers were being asked to wait tables. Even though the suspension was still in place, the owner asked if the server could work several shifts that weekend.
The server said no, telling the owner he “hadn’t learned his lesson yet.” The owner went quiet and said he would handle it.
When the server came back the next week, everything felt different. Everyone was extra friendly, and the owner has been much more polite since then. The suspension has never come up again, but it seems the lesson was learned.
