Entitled behavior in line for coffee or in the office is one thing. Having your life saved by people and not saying Thnk you? Dude, come on! This is the kind of story that makes you wonder if the weather wasn’t the only thing freezing.

Two hikers, saved by a rescue team and given emergency accommodation at a hotel, skipped out on paying hotel. Not even a 'Thank You' was offered before they disappeared
-
The rescue team braved dangerous conditions for hours, the hotel dropped everything late at night to offer shelter and food at a discount, and the hikers’ response was to ghost everyone involved. No note, no call, no awkward attempt at an apology. Just silence, and a contact number that might as well have been a fake dial tone.

The excuse was that their money was left in their tent, which is still sitting somewhere on the mountain. Fair enough, except they promised to send payment once they were back, and then disappeared like they were fleeing the scene of a crime. The hotel didn’t ask for full price. They didn’t demand a five-star review. They just wanted to be paid for the basics, the way most people expect when they open their doors to strangers in need.

After everything, the rescue, the hospitality, the late-night kindness, there’s nothing. No gratitude, no acknowledgment, no attempt to make things right. The only thing left behind is a bill and a story that sounds more like a bad joke than real life.

Some people treat kindness like a free pass, forgetting that decency isn’t just about being rescued. It’s about remembering who helped you when you were stranded, cold, and out of options. The mountain might be harsh, but it’s got nothing on the chill of walking away and leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces.

The most amazing part of the story (missing above) is that in the morning they tried to negotiate a further discount on their hotel bill, tried to get them to open the kitchen up to make them breakfast (apparently wasn't included - room only) and then tried to get someone to give them a ride out of the valley for free.

Should have left those ingrates on the mountain, they must be embarrassed by now.

There should be a way to blackball them from all the other rescues. Make them pay to play from now on. Rescued to a holding cell until they pay off their debts

Karma will get them. May not be as soon as we'd like but it'll happen.

Hope they put them back on the mountain and walk away when they've found them!

They might've wandered off and got lost on the mountain again. They've got form for that.

At first, I wondered if they may have gotten lost again..perhaps. But not even thanking any of them for their kindness, and giving them a fake contact number? Nah, it's safe to assume they had no intention of contacting them/being contacted again

Put themselves in an avoidable dangerous situation, got saved and rewarded for their effort. No lessons learned for sure.

Years ago I was working on a fishing boat and we found a kayaker who had been blown quite a ways off the coast out to sea. When we found him he was soaking wet and shivering so we pull him on board and towed his kayak behind us, we gave him a warm drink and the boat owner lent him a quite expensive sailing jacket to help him warm up. We dropped him off at shore, gave him our phone number and said just drop the jacket off when you can. Did we ever hear from him again? Nope. Did we get the jacket back? Nope. People are just ungrateful.

Stiffing a hotel that gave you a massive discount out of the kindness of their hearts is a total villain move. Those hikers are lucky the mountain didn't keep them, because the local hiking community never forgets a name after a stunt like that.

I found the story online and am now angry. Sadly, the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team felt "obliged to reimburse" the hotel themselves to maintain good relations with supporters. Although the hotel owners/Inn Keepers sound like good people who wouldn't hold this against the rescue company.
As for the rescued individuals, you know the two guys who could have d*** had they not been rescued? According to the article, they demanded further discounts, extra food, and transportation assistance, despite the generosity provided.
Entitled? yeah, that's one word for it. I have others, but don't really want to get banned.

I think most people who are stranded in weather related situations aren't the most responsible nor smartest people. Normal people would check the weather and cancel their plans when the forecast are iffy rather than risking their lives. I can't say I'm surprised that they skipped town on the people who helped them in their time of need.
