There are a host of workplace red flags in this anecdote. First of all, new moms deserve flexibility and respect as they adjust to their new schedules. If that means that they need to temporarily work from home for a bit so they can get better acquainted with their newfound relationship to work-life balance, so be it! It doesn't matter how important optics are in a workplace. There should always be exceptions for certain conditions.
This also brings us to the extreme weather conditions we have been experiencing lately on the East Coast and elsewhere. The fact that it was so cold in this lady's area that the front door of the office was frozen shut and no one was there to help her just goes to show how ridiculous the notion of coming into the office on a day like that was. Not to mention, it's unsafe for anyone to have to stand outside in the freezing cold like that!

"Every morning, I work alone in an empty, dark building, and never see my supervisor. I'm not allowed to WFH because we're an 'in-person office'"
