The author knew that there was no rule in the employee handbook that said anything (yet) about whether or not you could wear such devices in the office. HR and upper management certainly tried to apply existing rules to this scenario, but the author expressed that this would be a stretch.
Thankfully, they were dealing with an employee who did not have some kind of ulterior motive. He was just trying to look cool for once! So he was happy to comply and remove the glasses for the day. Still, following this event, literally everyone in all of the aforementioned departments began drafting new rules to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.
