HR panics after employee walks into the office wearing auto-recording smart glasses: 'Nobody knows what the policy is because the policy doesn't exist'

Nothing will make corporate employers panic quite like an employee who records everything.

The most amusing part of this workplace anecdote is that the employee in question didn't exactly know what he was doing. In fact, he thought that he was just spicing up his wardrobe by coming into work that day with a stylish new fashion choice. He did not anticipate the pushback he would get from upper management, human resources, security, and even IT.

The problem was that the employee decided to bring the auto-recording smart glasses he recently purchased to work that day. The author of this story, who was the go-to IT guy, was called down to the front desk by security because of a "situation." He assumed it would be some sort of technical malfunction, which is not what he wanted to be dealing with before 10:00 AM. Instead, he ended up having to deal with something he had never handled in this workplace before.

It seems like the employee himself had no idea what the problem was. He wasn't trying to secretly record the inner workings of his corporate environment, but the problem is that it didn't matter if he was going to do that or not. The issue was that he could record everything if he wanted to.

The author knew that there was no rule in the employee handbook that said anything (yet) about whether or not you could wear such devices in the office. HR and upper management certainly tried to apply existing rules to this scenario, but the author expressed that this would be a stretch.
Thankfully, they were dealing with an employee who did not have some kind of ulterior motive. He was just trying to look cool for once! So he was happy to comply and remove the glasses for the day. Still, following this event, literally everyone in all of the aforementioned departments began drafting new rules to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.
