People were expected to remain in one profession with the same employer for life, ideally. Careers were frequently inherited or shaped by geography, class, gender, and the workplace was more blue collar and structured. This really came about in full force after the industrial revolution. Factories, offices, and trades relied on fixed schedules, clear chains of command, and repetitive tasks. Success was measured by loyalty and dedication rather than creativity or intelligence. For many people, work was primarily about survival and providing for the family. It was something you just did, and it defined your character in a lot of ways.

As time went on, the technological advances and changes in society's expectations built the trajectory for a new landscape of working. Computers, automation, and the internet transformed how and where work could happen, and what work was available. Knowledge-based jobs expanded, and creativity became increasingly valuable. The idea of a "job for life" began to be an outdated notion. People started focusing on decentralized work, work that fulfilled them, and finding their identity through work, rather than work creating an identity for them.

Remote work, freelancing, and gig-based employment have all increased. Younger generations are valuing flexibility and work-life balance more than climbing a hierarchy of positions on an invisible ladder. And when you think about it, cats have been a part of that. They're there for us whether we work from home, a factory, an office, or not at all. They're an integral part of life and the workplace, especially with the rising trends towards technological work. They basically dominate the internet, so having them around isn't a waste of time. Observing them in their natural state is the best thing you can do to climb that invisible ladder of work.
