I am at a moral loss right now. I am temporarily working in the suburbs of a big city and was putting up notices of our work when I noticed a friendly cat

animal clearly bit him. His feet and body were a bit dirty and his shoulders were boney and his tummy distended. He was unfixed.

The following days I worked in that neighborhood he frequently visited my crew and I and we noticed him taking shelter under cars

for warmth and against one porch in particular. I saw a girl walk up that porch one of the days, no older than 14 or 15, and I
  • 06
asked "is this your cat?" There was a long pause and she said "yes" then "his name is Midnight". So. I let him be. The

next day at sunrise, we find him huddling under cars for warmth again in 20 degree or less weather. To which I begin to wonder if

he really is her cat since there are no food or water bowls on their porch and they never seem to take him in at night. I offered him water

cat and would love to bring him home. I get a call from the teenage girl again saying he is her cat. I say "okay I will bring him back". As I am
  • 12
on my way back to the neighborhood to bring him back I get another call, this time from the neighbor who left the box out. I ask if
  • 13
she is the owner and she says "no, but I'm gonna speak on their behalf, you should take him. They don't treat him right and they don't

once in awhile they toss some food on the porch all the big ol' mean feral cats come and bt him up for it. I always

have to chase them off or feed him myself. He got bit a few weeks ago and they didn't do nothin for his W ds. They just

let him bld and didn't bring him inside." So now I feel sk but relieved. Like my judgement was right
  • 18
that this was a neglected cat. I show up at the door willing to negotiate with the parents for the cat. The mom opens the door, and I say "are you the

cat's owner" and she says flippantly "no, he's my daughters cat" like a 14 yr old can own a cat independently of her family in the same

house. The daughter comes up and is clearly happy to see him. I make sure they take him inside before I leave. I inform the

neighbor and she is shocked he was taken in. I check in 2 days later. The cat is back on the streets and not being allowed in doors. I call animal control,

the operator told me just to take the cat as if the cat is not being confined or chained they can't do anything, but if they are not allowing the cat into their home and not

  • 26
he will be better off in a warm loving home who can protect and feed him. I just feel like this girl is going to know I took him and since she has my contact info from

the letter she will try to contact me or approach me while I am at work (we will be doing work on that street until April)
  • 28
So I FINALLY picked up the cat, he's a pretty good hider and I almost had trouble finding him today as well but we finally got him to come out to the sound of some food
  • 29
shaking! I swung by the humane society to make sure he wasn't microchipped (he wasn't) and will be making a vet

appointment for him shortly. I haven't decided if I am going to keep him or find a home for him. This has been a roller coster of emotions and
  • 31
anxiety for me tbh. But if I do decide to rehome him I am going to do it personally, for sure.
  • 32
DreamlandZombie I have decided to keep him! He has his first vet appointment tomorrow!
