My kitten is "marinating" his toys in the toilet and bringing them to my bed. Send help.

I've had cats my whole life, but my 7-month-old, Mochi (full name: Momčilo), is on a different level. He has a genuine, slightly alarming fixation with the toilet that I was not prepared for.
  • 05
It's the flush that does it. It doesn't matter where he is in the apartment or how deep he's sleeping, the second he hears that water, he's sprinting.
  • 06
He doesn't just watch, the guy tries to get involved. If the lid is up, he'll dip his entire head inside to watch the vortex like it's the most interesting thing he's ever seen.

I'm used to cats liking toilet water. My 3-year-old female is a fan of bowl water too. Because of her, I already have ceramic water bowls that I refresh few times a day. She's happy with the upgrade. Mochi? He couldn't care less.

So, I started keeping the lid closed. Problem solved, right? Not even close. Mochi has decided that the lid is a personal insult. I actually have video of him biting the rim of the seat and shoving his entire paw(arm? leg?) elbow deep into the gap to try and lever it open.

He's still small, so physics is on my side for now, but the brute force he uses is actually impressive. Closing the door should do the trick? Well, not quite. My older cat has mastered the art of opening doors, meaning the bathroom is essentially a 24/7 public park for Mochi's shenanigans.

The real chaos happens if the lid is left open for even a second. He's started this habit of dunking his plush toys in the bowl and bringing the dripping mess to my bed.

I've realized his name was a self-fulfilling prophecy: in my language, močiti (mochiti) is the verb for soaking or dipping. So when he's at the toilet, on moči (he is soaking). I basically named him 'The Soaker' and then acted surprised when he started marinating his toys.

I've basically created a monster. He doesn't even wait for the cover of night anymore. He'll deliver a soggy offering right in the middle of the day while I'm trying to read or work. I am being haunted by a creature. of my own naming, and my patience (and my duvet cover) is wearing thin.

I genuinely need to know: 1. Has anyone else dealt with a "Toilet Extremist" like this? Is it just a weird kitten phase or is this my life now?
  • 14
    2. Does it get worse? I'm worried he's going to figure out how the handle works and just spend his day flushing my money down the drain. 3. Will he eventually grow out of the "soggy gift" stage, or should I just start sleeping with the bedroom door locked?
  • 15
He's a great cat otherwise, super sweet and energetic. He just seems to be spiritually aligned with the plumbing. Please tell me I'm not the only one dealing with a kitten who thinks the toilet is a playground.

TL;DR: My kitten is obsessed with the toilet. He tries to pry the lid open with his elbows, and my older cat opens the bathroom door for him like a locksmith. He brings me toilet-soaked toys in bed as gifts. Ironically, his name (Mochi) sounds like the word for "soaking" in my language. He is fulfilling his destiny and I am very damp.

AletheiaNyx Check out baby locks for toilets. They exist and will likely save you a lot of moist surprises.

table-grapes this. baby proofing is pet proofing! my doorways are (unfortunately) covered in baby gates to keep the d in rabbit out of certain rooms but baby proofing is clutch for pet proofing!

MoonshineEclipse Can I just say "moist surprises" is a really funny way to put this
  • 21
HotPurplePancakes My dad says his cats 'baptize' their toys haha

dollmoth9 door Absolutely baby locks! Either for the toilet or the so they can't access the bathroom at all. My cat likes to play with the knobs of the gas stove so I had to get baby locks for those right away in case she actually managed to turn them.

idkkkkkkkkk69 I'm so happy my cat does this in her water bowl rather than our toilet.

Kuneria My boyfriend's cat used to dip my dirty underwear in his water bowl, and then drink from it, then he would drag my wet undies all over the house. I used to think it was my boyfriend being an absolute degenerate but then i witnessed the cat doing it. I told my boyfriend about it and all he said was "my MAN."

panicnarwhal yep, i have to change the filters in our water fountains at a remarkable rate, all because our cat like to play in the fountain - and dunk toys in the fountains, and dip her entire chest in the fountain several times a day her chest is perpetually soaked, the fur pulled into little wet spikes lol it's gross, but at least it's not a toilet
  • 26
chchchcheetah My thoughts exactly. Thankfully I have never left my toilet lid open (after she almost fell IN once) for more than 2 seconds, but I come home to toys in water bowls every day. Attempts on the water fountains but she doesn't usually get it all the way in. Thankfully she does not deliver them to my bed either haha

Hol-Up_A_Minute My childhood cat put them in the water dish and then hid them in our shoes getting ready to head out the door, and suddenly squishhh
  • 28
just_girlly Hahaha mine does that too. Sometimes she leaves it in there and then complains about not being able to drink water

rockinem 192 This sign hanging in my bathroom for that very reason; There is no reasoning with tabby cats, so we must be the ones to adapt... ☺ PLEASE CLOSE THE LID

llamacorn96 Maybe try getting the boy a lil running water fountain. An ex's cat refused to drink out of anything but the faucet till he got her a fountain. Some kitties just like the running water, they don't drink from stagnant water in the wild.
