  • "My Manager Decided We Need 'Mandatory Fun' on Friday After Work"

One would think that after three years of working from home, my manager would have understood what boundaries mean.
  • But apparently not. A few Fridays ago at 5:30 PM, she sent a message on Slack with a Zoom link titled 'Friday Fun Sesh!', which was exactly when we were all shutting down our laptops for the weekend.
  • The call started with the usual forced small talk, and then she made us play an online version of 'Two Truths and a Lie' about our Q3 goals.
  • Half the team was on mute, claiming their 'internet was cutting out'. One of my colleagues had his camera off, and I could hear his son having a full-blown meltdown in the background.
  • After 30 agonizing minutes, she said, completely deadpan, 'The energy feels a bit low today, guys,' and then scheduled another one for two weeks later.
  • Seriously, if you want to kl team spirit, this is how you do it.

  • Tall-Ad-1955 Are you salary exempt or hourly? Were you paid for that time?
  • Soft_Construction793 Suggest that Monday morning or Wednesday morning might be a better time for a required fun time. Say it openly so others can agree or say it anonymously if you are afraid of repercussions. You all have lives, and Friday after work is your time.
  • Flashy-Whereas-3234 In Australia around 4:30pm we all raid the fridge and crack a beer. There's about an hour until we're all completely useless and the consumption continues past there. Your mandatory fun should follow the same rules. If you can't drink due to prior arrangements (driving) you're excused, and everyone else is considered useless for work purposes, but you might get some work banter and good ideas out of people in the run up to home time. Friday fun is supposed to be morale-buildi
  • Diesel07012012 Your manager knows she's useless and she's compensating.
  • Klutzy_Cat1374 Reminds me of the online happy hours they had during lockdown. I'm not drinking on camera with my team.
  • No-Bunch6895 I hope you're being paid for any type "mandatory" fun
  • purplelilac701 It's not 2020 anymore. This came and d d at my office that year when we were all virtual.
  • El_Cartografo Crack a beer on camera. Let them try to argue drinking on work time hours. after
