If everyone else on the team is having these problems with him, he's definitely the problem. It's not like he just has extremely high expectations of this one employee. He wants it all, and he wants it all right now.

That can backfire quickly. Most bosses don't want to hear that you cannot handle any feedback on your work, even when their feedback is unwanted. “Keep it to yourself, I can't handle feedback right now,” is something you might say to your best friend when you're ranting about your love life, and they want to give you advice instead of giving you support. With your boss, it's better to let unwanted feedback go in one ear and out the other. You don't want to put a target on your back when they're already unhappy with some aspect of your work performance.

That kind of thing happens in stories on the internet, but they're far less common in real life. Has anyone experienced something dramatic like that in the actual workplace?

At the end of the day, this is probably the only solution that will really improve this employee's life. It doesn't matter how many employees he burns out: there's a very good chance he won't change. He might change if this Christmas Eve he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future and acknowledges the error of his ways, but there are ten months until Christmas, and this employee doesn't have that long to wait! I hope that her next boss will actually give her enough time to get her work done. I hope she gets a raise, too, while she's at it.
