Adopting a dog comes with a long list of wholesome side effects that scientists and dog owners alike have noticed.
For starters, spending time with the dog can boost mood and reduce stress. Interacting with dogs has been shown to increase oxytocin - the bonding hormone - in both humans and dogs, which explains why petting a dog can feel like pressing the brain’s “everything is fine now” button. Dogs also encourage regular exercise because they require walks, which conveniently get humans outside moving as well. Many people find that having a dog adds structure to their day through feeding, walking, and play routines. Socially, dogs are also excellent icebreakers. A cute dog on a walk tends to attract friendly conversation from neighbors or other dog owners, making communities feel more connected. Of course, there’s also the daily supply of tail wags, goofy zoomies, and dramatic greetings when you return home.
Adopting a dog means gaining a loyal companion and a surprisingly effective little happiness generator.

If you have a dog, you’ve probably noticed that privacy is more of a theoretical concept. The moment you stand up to go somewhere - kitchen, hallway, bathroom - your dog is right behind you like a very dedicated security detail.
This behavior comes from the social nature of the dog. Dogs evolved from wolves, which live and move in coordinated groups, so staying close to trusted companions feels natural and safe. Over thousands of years living with humans, dogs have transferred that pack instinct onto their favorite people. Following you from room to room helps them keep track of their “pack leader” and maintain that sense of connection. Dogs are also highly curious animals, and any sudden human movement might signal something interesting - food, a walk, or possibly a mysterious activity requiring investigation. Unfortunately, this includes bathroom trips.
To your dog, you disappearing behind a door without supervision is deeply suspicious. Clearly, their presence is required to ensure everything proceeds according to proper pack safety regulations.
