We could definitely argue that looking at memes all the time is not exactly high on the list of desirable skills, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't have its merits. It familiarizes you with the often complex and overwhelmingly varied world of internet culture, and introduces you to topics that you may never have given a second thought to otherwise. It can also increase your ability to read into the message behind the message and consider the implications of that for culture as a whole.
However, it isn't like the majority of meme viewers are thinking about that when they scroll through a list like this. They are just interested in getting their fix of entertainment and distraction. They can give themselves a pat on the back for improving their skill in memeing in the same time, though.
