I just quit a job on the spot. Am I in the wrong?

I have a full-time job, but 2 months ago, I picked up a nighttime office cleaning job to help save up money for an upcoming surgery. Things were generally smooth sailing until I noticed yesterday that my hours were suddenly slashed in half. Two people were added to my shift for training and to take on half my hours

thereafter. I got no heads up from anybody. If I hadn't checked the notification about my published shifts more closely, I wouldn't have known until I walked onto the job next week. I'm lucky that I don't have to depend on this for full-time income. I'm p ed that someone who *could have been* could have been left in a really precarious position, if this job was all or most of their income. It's ride at best, really f at worst. ed up

So, today, I quit. No heads up either. At first I was going to give them a few days and tell them next week. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how messed up it was. I hit most of my savings goal already, so I just texted them today that yesterday was my last day. Am I overreacting?

Commenters agreed that this was reasonable.

formerly_gruntled Nope, you are not over- reacting. I am stunned than no one talked to you. Not for your input, but so that you were aware that the change was coming. If they were human, they might have given you a reason. Or excuse.

desertboots Nope. My friend who has run a janitorial service since the 80s agrees with you. Respect runs both ways.

sevensixtwo They didn't give you notice that they were cutting your hours, why would you owe them notice that you're cutting them more?

Figwit_ First of all can we just talk about how much of a tragedy it is that you had to pick up a second job to pay for medical care? F man. This is America.

Summerisle7 Nope, you did the right thing. You owed them nothing. They screw their employees over, these are the consequences. Enjoy your free evenings!

rosstafarien NTA. Good job for providing significant negative feedback when someone tried to j you around.

jpeg 1900 No. I asked my first long term boss about 2 week notices. He said he'd rather you just leave if you're done.

SnodePlannen "I picked up an extra job working nights so I could afford my surgery." Guess the country.

ClockWeasel Unemployment for constructive dismissal based on reduced hours, but you need proof

TheCrimson St... Is it a thing to do? Maybe. Probably. But capitalism doesnt care if people do the right thing, or the decent thing So, you're just playing the game based on the rules other people made

icenhour76 Not at all the answer to hey op here are your replacements train them for us should be nope not going to that i quit.

Common _Wrongd... Did they provide benefits? A lot of jobs, restaurants especially from my experience, will overstaff so that everyone is working part time, and you can pick up a shift for full time if someone calls out. That way they can avoid paying benefits because you're not full time.

My last job, I interviewed and said I'd like 30 hours a week, and they said they needed me for 40. I agreed. They scheduled me 30 every week and sent me home early every day. At my current job, they said they'd schedule me 30 hours a week with the ability to pick up shifts... and then this coming week, I'm only scheduled 20 hours.

SamuelVimesTrai... NOR This is exactly the right response to this disrespect. granted, you state you didn't really need that job - making it easier - but still. Well done. Not that they will learn anything from this - but well done nonetheless.

thenord321 Considering they have been planning to hire, had meetings about it, HR posted recruitment for it, completed interviews and back ground checks, and now finally scheduled the first days, and during all that no one bothered to notify you that they're cutting your hours and want you to train your replacements... ya, they can go clean for your shifts too.

newhappyrainbow 2 months in, and a second job? They were in the probationary period for you, and failed.

Spiel_Foss Sounds solid. Companies think they can f people up because they are stuck in a job. They obviously didn't count on you not being stuck. But after an hour, they still didn't care. Leaving immediately was the only play.

Ok_Butterscotch... Don't feel sorry when your quitting your job even if they treat you well. It's important to do what's best for yourself never for the sake of others

Rogue-scholar When I worked for the YMCA this was there go to move. They would just cut an employees hours and keep doing it until the person quit. Good thing they are a charity. They definitely act like it!
  • 25
cmotdibbler You gave them the same notice they gave you when they started adding people to your shift. Gotta make sure everybody is part-time. They will use the threat of a "bad reference" to intimidate you.
