  • "The Neighbor Who Denied Borrowing My Tool Until There Was Proof"

I've lent tools to neighbors before, so when this happened, it didn't feel like a big deal at first.
  • One afternoon, this neighbor came over and asked if they could borrow one of my tools.
  • It was something I used regularly, but not urgently, and they said they just needed it for a quick job and would return it soon.
  • It sounded normal, so I handed it over without thinking much about it. A few days passed and the tool didn't come back.
  • I didn't follow up right away because I assumed they were still using it or just forgot.
  • After about a week, I went over and asked about it casually. That's when things immediately felt off.
  • They looked at me like they didn't understand what I was talking about and said they didn't borrow anything from me.
  • At first, I thought maybe they genuinely forgot. So I reminded them what tool it was and when they came over to get it.
  • Instead of remembering, they doubled down. They said they never asked for anything and that I must be mistaken.
  • That threw me off because I clearly remembered the interaction. It wasn't something vague or easy to confuse.
  • I remembered handing it to them directly. I tried to stay calm and explained it again, but they kept repeating the same thing.
  • Then they said something that made it worse. They asked if I had any proof. That caught me off guard because it suddenly turned into a situation where I had to defend something I knew happened but couldn't physically prove.
  • I didn't take a photo, didn't have a message, nothing like that. It was just a normal neighbor favor, and now it felt like I was being accused of making it up.
  • After that, the conversation went nowhere. They stuck to their version, and I walked away frustrated because I knew what happened, but I had nothing to show for it.
  • Over the next few days, I mentioned it to a couple of other neighbors, mostly out of frustration, not expecting anything to come from it.
  • I just needed to say it out loud because it didn't make sense. Then something unexpected happened.
  • One of the neighbors across the street told me they might have something on their CCTV.
  • Their camera faces part of the street, including the area in front of my house. We checked the footage, and there it was.
  • Clear as day. The neighbor walking up to my place, me handing them the tool, and them leaving with it.
  • Seeing it confirmed what I already knew, but it also changed everything. I went back to them and told them about the footage.
  • At first, they didn't say much. Then their attitude shifted. Instead of denying it the same way, they became defensive.
  • They said maybe they did borrow something but must have returned it already. Then they started suggesting that I might have misplaced it after getting it back, even though that never happened.
  • The tone changed completely. What started as calm denial turned into frustration and irritation on their side.
  • They weren't trying to figure out what happened anymore. It felt like they were trying to protect themselves from being caught.
  • Now they're saying they'll "look into it," but it doesn't feel genuine. It feels like they're just trying to find a way out of it without admitting anything directly.
  • What bothers me the most isn't even the tool anymore. It's how quickly something simple turned into denial, then excuses, and now defensiveness once there's actual proof.
  • If there hadn't been a camera, I'd still be standing there with nothing but my word against theirs.
  • At-home cctv security camera, homeowner, footage
  • Any Ferret8369 the switch from "never borrowed it" to "maybe i returned it" says everything
  • OP BrightAmbassador 4000 totally agree, how fast he change his stand.
  • Brilliant_East_4100 the "do u have proof?" line is wild. the AUDACITY on its finest
  • OP BrightAmbassador4000 thats the word AUDACITY to deny and ask for proof.
  • Koolest Kat I am/was the family tool guy. After many events leaving a bad taste, getting stonewalled or worse. I had a sleeve on my garage door, on the front are the names (plainly bold lettering) than CANNOT borrow anything. Inside was a library card, i list their name, tool and expected return date. This usually settled who where and when of a tools history. It mostly solved a mystery when I would look for a seldom used tools. Now, it's just no. No you cannot, No you are not, No means No. This
  • OP BrightAmbassador4000 wow, thats nice to have this cards. I should start doing it too.
  • khampang Big sign in front yard," Jim at 2375 stole my cordless drill"
  • OP BrightAmbassador 4000 this is funny, but if i did it maybe ill be the one who get sue
  • Brief-Turnover8161 this is why i don't lend tools anymore.
  • OP BrightAmbassador 4000 this will be my lesson learned here
  • FerretGoddess Mevi I bet they broke it and don't want to admit it. So they chose the weirdest possible path to try to wiggle out of owing you.
  • OP BrightAmbassador 4000 thats possible, i think i should update here again
  • Individual-Wheel-801 lesson learned... some neighbors aren't worth helping
  • OP BrightAmbassador 4000 some of them yes but some of them worth helping
  • BriefMemory6235 if there was no CCTV, u'd be the one looking crazy
  • OP BrightAmbassador 4000 totally agree, crazy finding proof just for him
  • fiestafan73 I'd make sure every neighbor knows about it so that 1) they know not to loan him anything, and 2) they will know better than to try and screw over OP.
