  • The “no idea” part is questionable. Cats can seem aloof, shy, or even apprehensive at times - but once a bond between a cat and their human becomes strong enough, it's almost as if the cat attunes themselves onto the soul of their person. This imprint on the soul is a familiar thing to everyone who has ever raised a cat. Because if you have, you know they might make these adorable “mistakes” - but they're not done by mistake at all. Cats know if our demeanor has changed, if our feelings are different, and if we need help. Sure, they might not know if you're heartbroken, anxious, or what the world has done to you. But they know to go into healing mode - sit close, purr, hug.

    judyflorence Mine does this exact thing. 2am, wide awake spiraling about work, and then 14 pounds of warm purring fur just parks itself on my chest like "I got you." Knocks me out within 10 minutes every time. Better than melatonin honestly.

    Important Wrap 772 Purring has been shown to lower blod pressure. I think they do know. There have been lots of documented cases of cats saving people. I heard of some cases where the cat started fr king out and woke up the husband of a woman with diabetes. Turns out her blod sugar was really off. Her husband was able to help her and wake her up.

  • It's very true! Cats do save people's lives - and that's great evidence of how much these floofy creatures care about us, just as much as we care about them. We actually asked our pawsome community quite recently if their cats had ever woken them up for a justified reason, and let us give you a little spoiler to some of the ameowzing stories given there - some cats literally saved the lives of their humans in the middle of the night.     If cats saving their humans' lives isn't a concrete argument for cats caring, we don't know what is. Cats who care about their people, about their human family, are a core characteristic of them. And this is why we love them so much. Seriously, cats are the best.

    They definately know, they'll react to changes in mood or hormones too, like going out of thier way to do things to cheer you up

    There was a story a few years ago on reddit with a woman that tried hard to get her cat to eat dry food and would get happy and excited when it did, when she got depr_sed with some events in her life, the cat carried in some dry food, made sure she was watching then would eat it to try getting that happy response from her, iirc that cat was a male floofy tux

    mandmrats My mom's cat would wake her up when her sleep apnea got bad. She'd sit on her chest and paw at her face until she woke up. One of my cats is very emotionally tuned to people. If someone is stressed, she sticks to them like glue.

    Flat-Limit5595 I have a cat that needs physical touch with a victim to sleep, like he needs to be on me. Now i cant sleep without a purring 18lb buff cat curled up on my bot. Like if he gets separated from me, neither of us can sleep. Its awful but hes cute and he loves me.

    Rakifiki My boy will try that. Unfortunately he is fifteen pounds and I swear he puts all of that weight directly on the cramp and it doesn't help ... But he's trying so I hate to push him away. And once he settles, he is much nicer than a heating pad tbh. It's just that one or two minutes of kneading before it q_q

    LA4th District You're very lucky ②For sixteen years my void would come into the bedroom if he heard a rustle in the middle of the night and do the same thing. I'd give him a little hand hug. Sometimes just as I was drifting back to sleep I'd feel him leave again once his work was done. I'm glad you have this lovely cat to help you out too.

    LargeSeaworthiness1 i have no doubt they know! my late beloved baby was an absolute menace if our stomachs ached. he would be so insistent that he sit on us; he wouldn't take no for an answer! and so he would curl up on us and help soothe the aches.

    he also knew before i did that i have dysautonomia, i swear. he would always lie down on my chest with his heart over my heart. always specifically right there, never anywhere else on my chest. like he knew my nervous system and cardiovascular system don't communicate well.

    SecretKeeperoftheSun I had a childhood cat that if I was sad after school (ab ive elementary teacher situation, long story) she would come running from where she was exploring outside and rub against me and her tell would rub along my face as if wiping my tears. She would let me pet her and would comfort me and then when I was all better would run off to play or guard her territory. We cuddled almost every night for so long.

    My current void baby is also sweet. She will feel if I'm anxious, sad, or having anxiety attacks. Comes out of the blue and snuggles on my chest and rubs my face purring. It feels like a "I got you and you got me". It always felt like these moments are times when you feel so connected and bonded with these beautiful creatures that I always joked they feel like witch familiars. Where they just get you on a non verbal level and yet have their own fun personalities and keep you going day after day.

    totally-jag She knows. She knows. Good kitty. I was really sick for a year. My wife has a cat that spends all her time with her, sitting on her lap, sleeping on her in bed. When I was sick for the year, that cat switched over and gave me all the attention. Sat on my lap, sleep on me, gave me all her attention. She knew I was sick and needed comfort.
