  • Friends hanging out on a boat together at sunset.
  • [I reported] my own cousin to the marina after I found him on my boat with a group of people I dont even know

I bought my boat about two years ago. its not huge, nothing fancy, but I spent a long time saving for it and I keep it in good shape.
  • I use it on weekends when I can and its genuinely the thing I look forward to most.
  • my cousin has been asking to use it since basically the week I got it. I said no the first few times and eventually just told him directly that im not comfortable lending it out, its not insured for other operators, and if something happens im the one on the hook.
  • Sailboat party diving off of the side of a boat.
  • he pushed back a little but seemed to drop it. couple months ago I get a call from a number I dont recognize.
  • turns out its a guy at the marina saying theres a situation at my slip and I should probably come down.
  • I get there and my cousin is on my boat. not just him. four other people I have never seen in my life.
  • they had a cooler, music going, looked like they had been there a while. my cousin sees me pull up and actually waves.
  • Group of friends partying on a boat in the afternoon.
  • I asked him how he got access to the slip. he said he told the dock attendant on duty that I said it was okay and he was family.
  • I told the marina manager what happened and asked them to put a flag on my account so nobody could access my slip without me being present.
  • they took it seriously, wrote up an incident report, and my cousin and the group had to leave.
  • the attendant who let them through got a talking to apparently. my cousin called me that night furious.
  • said I humiliated him in front of people he was trying to impress, that I could have just talked to him privately instead of making it official, that its family and family shares.
  • I said I already told him no multiple times and he lied to a marina employee to get onto my property.
  • I wasnt even supposed to be there that day. if that employee hadnt called me my cousin would have spent the whole afternoon on my boat with five strangers and I never would have known.
  • Marina with several sailboats docked.
  • AITJ for making it official instead of letting it go?
  • glowin_princesss he lied to get on your property and would have never told you. the marina report is the only reason you even found out. that call to make it official was the right one
  • Beautiful_Arm8364 He already made it "official" when the marina had to call you to come down. That put him on the marina's radar; not you. Don't let him blame you for his own f up.
  • Toptech1959 Go have a party at his house when he isn't home and see if he likes it.
  • Odd_Tea4945 NTJ and I am glad you did what you did to your cousin. You told him repeatedly "NO" and yet, he did what he wanted. He embarrassed himself
  • jamespirit He broke civil law most likely. He totally disrespected your boundaries. The cheek. I imagine you were livid and he could being defensive and angry reacting to your anger. However he has some cheek. ΝΤΑ
  • IntrntTrshQween67 Simple. No. This is spoilt entitled behaviour from your cousin
  • Chief OfTheBoat NTJ cousin, brother, mom, dad, child, girlfriend, first date - does not matter. No means No and nothing else.
  • hywaytohell I had some friends rent a large houseboat in Florida for a weeks vacation. There were 3 couples and the second day they were there a guy pulled up and asked what they were doing on his boat. They explained they had rented it for the week and showed him the paperwork which was signed by the marina manager. The had been renting other people's property out once he thought he knew the owners schedules and was sure they wouldn't be around. The owner turned to head to the office only to se
  • Shadyhollowfarm58 NTJ. Cousin is a total AH and totally doesn't respect your boundaries and property rights. If he wants a boat so badly, HE can scrimp and save for one of his own and pay for ongoing slip rent and maintenance. Obviously however, he has boat envy and wants to use yours for free. I'd never talk to him again after this type of invasion.
  • Ill-Life9031 If he and his friends acted in way that deserved to be on your boat then you would have never recieved a call about a situation. Your instincts were right about how he would act, and he is now the absolute last person I would let anywhere near the boat. I'm glad you spoke with the marina. If something had happened, they could have tried to hold you accountable.
