There's running a bit late, and then there's whatever this is. Leaving your pet, a dog nonetheless, with an acquaintance and saying you'll be back in a few hours. It's not like it's a goldfish that does nothing but stare blankly out into the void or even a cat that minds its own business most of the time. Dogs are famously known, most of them anyway, for their neediness and reliance on whatever person is taking care of them. They're kind of like a permanent toddler that you shove in a crate to sleep, and even that is growing increasingly controversial.
Beyond that, there's a vast difference between being prepared to watch a dog for a few hours versus a few days. Across any “few” hour period you probably won't have to feed itw. You won't have to take it for a walk either; you might only even need to let it out to do its business once for that entire time.
Once you start looking at the better part of a day, you're going to need a leash, you're going to need food, and you're going to need a plan and some insight about how to properly care for it. Vet contacts and schedules become essential parts of the program.
Definitely dropping the dog off with a leash was a prudent precautionary measure, but one can't help but wonder that since she left a half of bag of food if she didn't know she wouldn't be returning for some time longer than she said.
One thing is for certain here. Something smells bad here, and it's not (just) the dog or the candle.
