Clever couple of stray cats successfully enroll their kittens in a forever home, and are now carefully reviewing the terms of their own indoor retirement

Not all cats are fast to be adopted, but sometimes it's their choice.

Some cats have it really rough when it comes to their adoption. Mostly because people don't find them "appealing" enough in the shelter, or that they prefer a certain breed and don't consider the cat shelter at all. Some just keep waiting and waiting for the meowsterious Cat Distribution System to deliver them a kitty to their doorstep. But some people actually do get a CDS delivery right to their doorstep, but it's the cat who's taking their sweet time with the decision to be adopted. Because, honestly, it's always the cat that decides.

We all know cats are the true decision makers when it comes to the human-feline relationship status. So even with the Cat Distribution System drive to get adopted installed in them (you know, this "adopt me right meow, hooman!" software in the cat hardware), they might still call the shots and wait. Why? Every cat and their own Very Cat reasons, we guess. But that's okay, as long as every cat is eventually delivered to their purromised forever home - as every cat should.

But what about these two sweet strays down here? Well, they have an even more special story that's still going on. And it's even sweeter than usual. This bonded cat couple first took care of their kittens, making sure they arrived inside the home that took care of them as strays visiting the porch. They're not the first cat parents who took care of the kittens first, but it's such a rare and wholesome sight that we have to share it with you all here. And the cat couple? Oh, they're definitely getting adopted as well.

  • We want to stop and explain the situation with the orangeness of the cats. If an orange kitten is female, it's almost 100% certain that her father was also an orange cat. Orange fur in cats is controlled by a gene on the X chromosome, meaning:

    Males = XY. Only need one orange gene (from mom) to be orange.
    Females = XX. Need two orange genes (one from each parent) to be fully orange.

    So for a female kitten to be orange, she must get one orange gene from her mother and one orange gene from her father. Since a father only has one X chromosome, if he passes it on and it carries the orange gene, he himself will be orange. That’s why most orange cats are male - and orange females are rarer, almost 100% have an orange father.

    The only very rare exception is if the female is a chimera or has unusual genetic quirks, you might get an orange-looking female without a fully orange father - but that’s very uncommon.

    In short, the normal genetics state that: Orange daughter = orange dad.

    46rubberduck The first and most important thing you can do to help them is get them fixed. Stop the kittens cycles and also swill stop the male from fighting with other cats. Thank you for looking after them so well

    Legitimate-Battle263 OP we were able to get Nala(female) fixed but we haven't been able to get Ernie just yet. he's to more anxious than Nala is so we've been trying him up and have set appointments just incase. hasn't worked out so far but we did find a clinic that would let us bring him anytime whenever we do get him so that's good atleast

    46rubberduck Brilliant. Mama is fixed so this is definitely already making her life so much better, fighting off males and raising so many babies. Papa will hopefully stop fighting as soon as his trublepuffs are gone thanks again for making their lives enjoyable

    The first thing you should try to do is get both parents fixed! The male orange kitty is most likely getting in fights because he's not fixed.

    See if there's any TNR programs in your area, low cost spay/neuter clinics, and/or reach out to a rescue to see if they're able to help you get them fixed.
