Imagine being the Dean of Students in this scenario. He probably was slightly aware of this family and of their collective delusion. However, given the fact that this student showed up in her regalia and without warning, there is no question that this man was taken aback. Moreover, he likely felt even more anxious when he realized that he needed to be the person to discreetly confront the student and tell her to remove herself from the area.
What was this family thinking? One has to wonder if there were extended relatives in town who were under the impression that she really was graduating. Or perhaps it was all for social media. Whatever the reason was, the real tragedy here is not that the student couldn't walk during the ceremony and participate in all the pomp and circumstance. The real tragedy was that she wasn't graduating from high school with a diploma.
